In early April 2009, it’s to be noted that Mr. Bereket Simon, the Chief of Propaganda in Quote: Ethiopia, claimed the Gilgil Gibe Dam III was the “friendliest to the environment” in the world. In March 2009, the head of the Ethiopian Environmental Protection Agency (EEPA), Dr. Tewolde Berhane Gebre, said “I do not care for what you say” when a BBC journalist presented data from Dr. Richard Leaky, a Kenyan ecologist, about Gilgil Gibe Dam III’s environmental impacts, which Dr. Leaky claimed were never fully studied by EEPA (watch video below).
The European Investment Bank has decided to pull back its funding for Ethiopia’s hydropower dam following pressure calls by environmentalists that the Gibe 3 Dam threatens the food security and local economies that support more than half a million people in Southwest Ethiopia.
According to the banks statement, the Euro 1.55 billion hydropower dam would devastate the ecosystems of Ethiopia’s Lower Omo Valley and Kenya’s Lake Turkana.
The dam which is expected to be Africa’s tallest dam with the height of 240 meters and Ethiopia’s biggest investment, drew criticisms from environmentalists saying the construction will wreak havoc on the Omo River’s natural flood cycle.
The Bank’s statement further said in March 2009, Friends of Lake Turkana, a group of affected people in Kenya, urged the EIB not to fund the Gibe 3 because the affected communities could not withstand any more pressure on the little resources along the lake.

Experts have expressed concern over the environmental impact of the Ethiopian project on River Omo, the main source of water for Lake Turkana in Kenya.
The 14-member Kenyan team was led by the director of Water Resources, Mr John R Nyaoro. Ethiopian minister for Water Resources Asfaw Dingamo told the Kenyan delegation not to let outsiders dictate the direction of the relations between the two countries.

Following the recent publication of erroneous information regarding the alleged European Investment Bank decision not to finance the Gibe 3 project in Ethiopia, the EIB would like to confirm that, as of today, the Bank has not taken any formal decision on whether to undertake an appraisal of this project.

Quote: EIB statement on its possible involvement in the Gibe 3 project in Ethiopia Date: 04/06/2009
Following the recent publication of erroneous information regarding the alleged European Investment Bank decision not to finance the Gibe 3 project in Ethiopia, the EIB would like to confirm that, as of today, the Bank has not taken any formal decision on whether to undertake an appraisal of this project.
The Bank is following the development of this project closely and is aware of the issues raised by some NGOs which are typically the kind of issues that the Bank would examine in the course of its formal project appraisal. The Bank requires further studies in order to decide whether it should undertake the formal appraisal of this project. Should the EIB decide to move towards a project appraisal, it has already expressed its willingness to meet with interested civil society organisations in the future to discuss their concerns.
