McMaster SPHR would like to thank the following organizations for their assistance: McMaster Muslims for Peace & Justice and November 16 Coalition Starting June 25/06, Israel escalated its attacks in Palestine, particularly in the Gaza Strip, killing almost 100 civilians, and reoccupying the whole of Palestine. As of July 12/06, Israel launched a massive aerial bombing campaign against Lebanon, destroying almost the entire civilian infrastructure of the south and entire sections of Beirut and killing almost 250 civilians. These acts are illegal under international law: the right of nations to sovereignty, the obligation of occupying powers to not attack civilians and their infrastructure, the prohibition against spreading propaganda for war and more. These crimes against humanity are termed 'self-defense' because Hizbollah and Hamas took 3 Israeli soldiers hostage. Yet Israeli soldiers are not civilians, they are part of an occupying, aggressor army in violation of literally hundreds of UN resolutions. Illegally, for almost 60 years, Israel has occupied Palestine. Lebanon was invaded by the Zionist army countless times, with major initiatives taking place continuously since 1947, including the full-scale occupation of Lebanon in 1982-2000. To this day, Israel occupies Lebanese territory, namely the Shabaa Farms. The soldiers kidnapped by both Hizbollah and Hamas were also on occupied Lebanese and Palestinian territory respectively. Every people under occupation have a right to resist. Yet Canada has decided to join the ranks of the Zionists, guilty in its own right of spreading propaganda for war. Harper's conception that such attacks are 'measured' has no basis in logic. The actions of an aggressor state such as Israel in occupying a nation cannot be compared, according to UN law, with the actions of a people who are resisting that aggression, and certainly not when that aggression is so disproportionate. Yet Harper is refusing to support international law which Canada is signatory to, and thus is helping Israel kill our own Canadian citizens in Lebanon. The death of 8 Canadian citizens in Lebanon must rest on his shoulders. In turn, the Harper government has waited too long to evacuate the 50,000 Canadian citizens in Lebanon, where every second is a life and death matter. The Canadian people must stand for the rule of law, and intervene to stop the situation from escalating into all out war in the region, a possibility that threatens peace world-wide. Join our work to say no to wars of aggression, in Palestine and Lebanon, in Iraq, Afghanistan and in Haiti. This must not be allowed to escalate into an attack on other sovereign nations such as Iran and Syria. If the imperial powers, with the Canadian government in its ranks, will not stop this madness then the people must and will take it upon themselves.
