American Idol once again proved that talent is not something that the voting public is looking for when they dial in. This is probably why there hasn’t been an American Idol winner to reach any sort of true success in years and why non-winners usually end up with a more promising and successful career. Tonight was no exception when the singer with the best voice and the best chance to succeed as a mainstream pop star was eliminated. Pia Toscano, the stunning New Yorker with the amazing voice, was eliminated in what can only be called a shocker. On top of the elimination was the fact that the judges used their only save weeks ago for no reason whatsoever. Without Simon this show has lost any edge it had and because of that true talent is being sent home. Look for Pia to sign a deal with a label any day and have more success than anyone else from this season. I have no reason to watch this show now!

Judging by the slavering praise the judges heaped on every last candidate on Wednesday night's American Idol, it was hard to even guess at who would go home this week. Still, losing Pia Toscano is a pretty big surprise. She's one of the few people on the show who actually carries herself like someone comfortable onstage. It's a bit funny. She'd go onstage, week after week, and sing big weepy ballads very, very well. And every time she did it, the judges would get all on her to sing something uptempo. And the one week she did, it was weird and forced and she got voted off.
Anyway, here are some things that happened during the show:
• The whole gang came out for another group-sing, all the duets and trios of last week apparently a thing of the past. They sang a bunch of songs that had nothing to do with each other besides being, I guess, "rock songs": "I Love Rock and Roll"! "The Letter"! "Sweet Home Alabama"! Those are all great songs, and they all sounded faintly ridiculous in the way that only an American Idol group-sing can make a song sound.
• Ryan Seacrest said that it's our fault that somebody had to go home tonight, like we invented the show or some ####. We didn't invent the show, Ryan! Keep your blame to yourself!
• In the Ford commercial, all the contestants executed some sort of nonsensical heist that I didn't understand. I do, however, know now that I'll have to holler at Pia Toscano the next time I'm planning a bank job.
• Russell Brand, we learn, acted as a secret "charisma coach" this week, since apparently will.i.am didn't impart enough charisma on these kids. (On second thought, that actually does make sense.) This is an awfully nice thing for Russell Brand to do, and it obviously has nothing to do with all the movies he's got coming out. He's not very funny when he's not cussing. Pia said, with a straight face, that he had lots of great advice. No, Pia. No he didn't.
• Casey Abrams seemed absolutely flummoxed when Ryan Seacrest asked him about Kelly Clarkson, who apparently admitted to having a crush on Casey on Twitter. Ryan asks questions, Casey! It's what he does! Come prepared next time! And while we're on the topic, what the hell is Kelly Clarkson doing still watching American Idol? Or using Twitter? You'd think the whole universe-conquering pop-star job would keep her too busy. I guess she hasn't had a big song in a minute, though. Probably all that damn TV time is to blame.
• Lauren Alaina has apparently been spending time at the Taylor Swift School of Being Surprised That People Like You.
• Constantine Maroulis, a contestant from a million years ago, must be between ####ty Broadway shows, since he took the time to stop by and sing a deeply cheesy rendition of "Unchained Melody", with special bonus buttrock guitar-soloing. He looked exactly the same, and I still have fond memories of working at the Village Voice that time the paper ran a cover story about him acting like a tool and nobody could figure out why we put him on the cover. (Shout out to Constantine's fingerless leather gloves.)
• In a video package, Gwen Stefani said that she's not a stylist, which is at least some explanation for the dog####-ugly clothes she dressed everybody in the night before. In about 120 seconds, we worked through almost as many variations on Stefani going, "Whoo! That looks cute!" It was excruciating.
• Thor, we learned, comes from a place where magic and science are the same. Shut up, Thor.
• All the kids got to go to TMZ and bull#### around with those parasites, so they could pretend they were real celebrities for a couple of minutes and endure some terrible jokes. I like to pretend that TMZ doesn't exist. This made doing so difficult. Thanks, Idol.
• Iggy Pop, whose basic existence really shouldn't intersect with American Idol in any way whatsoever, showed up to run around shirtless and sing "Real Wild Child". Conventional wisdom is that this song was his '80s sellout move after years of intense, heady, groundbreaking stuff. But ######## it, I like this song. It was totally in Problem Child, and that movie was my #### when I was 10. I feel just as uncomfortable watching Iggy do his septuagenarian slither on this show as I did when I saw the reconstituted Stooges last summer. As absurdly great as that guy's back catalog is, I just don't want to watch him do anything anymore. It's a personal thing. I can't defend it.
• As Seacrest announced Pia's departure, I'm pretty sure the camera cut away from Randy just as soon as he started to yell the word "########". Also, did Jennifer Lopez cry? She might've cried. Pia actually seemed less torn up than J.Lo did. Pia was a G about it, at least until she got done singing.

Okay, let's try to make some sense of what happened Thursday.
First off, anybody who doesn't have direct access to American Idol's voting totals and patterns is only guessing when they offer reasons why Pia Toscano got eliminated in what must surely go down as the most surprising elimination in the show's history (sure, Daughtry left sooner than he should have -- but imagine if he'd gone out five weeks earlier -- and hardly anybody who watched Season Three predicted Jennifer Hudson's future career trajectory).
The conventional complaints about voting -- young girls and middle-aged women voting for guys, power-texting, few limits, etc. -- may explain why Pia wouldn't win, but it just doesn't explain her finishing in ninth place. Those factors might have contributed to this week's results, but they don't account for all of it.
What other factors might have come into play?
The judges: This might have been an unintended consequence of Simon Cowell's departure. This season's judging panel have responded to years of requests to lessen the barbed insults in favor of constructive criticism. Steven Tyler and, especially, Jennifer Lopez have tried to couch their instructions to all the contestants in the most loving terms possible. That's a great way to nurture talent, and I'm sure the singers all appreciate it, but the judges' true function on Idol is to give the audience cues about who to vote for.
Cowell could be counted on to always light into the most vulnerable contestants, raking them over the coals even when they didn't necessarily deserve it, then praise his favorites while dismissing their shortcomings. Cowell had people in mind that he knew ought to continue, and he did everything within his power to make sure they did.
This year's judges are taking a completely different approach to the task, trying to make sure that everybody gets a chance to improve. In doing that, they may have put Pia at a disadvantage, since her lack of stage presence was a weakness every bit as glaring as Paul McDonald's tonal quality or Stefano Langone's tendency to close his eyes and stretch his chin skyward as he sings. Week after week, the judges gave Pia pointed, specific instructions (which, by the way, she did not take to heart), perhaps giving voters the idea that she wasn't as good as she actually was.
In other words, this is what happens when the judges quit trying to manipulate the voters. You asked for it. Get used to it.
The viewers: Today, the story looks different, as Pia's fans come out of the woodwork to proclaim her praises. Until last night, though, the general impression I got from readers' comments about Pia was that people respected her but they didn't necessarily lover her. While people expected her to go deep into the competition (I think by this point, most readers here would have predicted a Top Three finish for her), she wasn't necessarily their favorite. Idol voting isn't about who viewers want to see go home, it's about who they want most to stay. Sometimes, that makes for weird goings-on at the bottom of the ballot.
The voting: Voting must have been down last night, at least from last week's 55 million. Otherwise, Ryan would have trumpeted the tally from the rooftop. Or at least the head of the stairs. Strange things happen when the votes are low.
The competition: This is a corollary to the two previous paragraphs. Perhaps this competition isn't as close as the season's level of talent indicates that it ought to be. If one contestant (or two, or three) is getting the lion's share of each week's votes, everybody else may be fighting for scraps at the bottom, where low vote counts make for unpredictable results.
One thing we do know now: Idol doesn't rig its voting. Believe what you will about who's voting or how they're voting, but no sane person can believe that Idol producers wanted Pia off the show at this point. The rationalizations necessary to get to that place go so far beyond the realm of Kris Allen-Arkansas-AT&T conspiracy theories as to be totally ludicrous.
So who gets helped by what happened Thursday? Well, you might think that the outrage over having lost five female singers in a row would translate into concerted efforts on behalf of the remaining women, Lauren Alaina and Haley Reinhart. Maybe they will get a bit of a bump, but remember: You could have said the same thing last week.
Three people -- Lauren, James Durbin and Scotty McCreery -- have yet to find themselves in the Bottom Three. Once they get over their shock, they may realize that Pia's unanticipated exit bodes very well for their chances going forward.

'American Idol': Who will go home tonight? Plus: The case for Jacob Lusk
Two contestants on American Idol will be sent home tonight. The judges save is no longer in play. The stress could not be more intense. Why am I typing like Ryan Seacrest talks? Why do we do anything in this world?
While you ponder that existential question, a brief tour of recent Idol history: When Matt Giraud was saved during Top 7 week in Season 8, wild card contestant Anoop Desai and early producer favorite/frontrunner Lil Rounds were sent home the next week. When Michael Lynche was saved during Top 9 week in Season 9, very early producer favorites/frontrunners Andrew Garcia and Katie Stevens packed their bags the following week — while why-is-he-still-here Abercrombie employee Tim Urban flashed his Cheshire grin from the wings. So what does this tell us about who will go home tonight?
That wild card contestant Naima Adedapo should worry. That wild card contestant, producer favorite, and kinda-sorta early frontrunner Stefano Langone should definitely worry. That kinda-sorta early frontrunner Jacob Lusk and producer favorite Paul McDonald are probably okay, but still have good reason to sweat. (More on Jacob in a second.) فعلاً البنية رهيبة وفنانة من كلو ..وعندها مستقبل باهر..
وأنا برضو زعلان من نتيجة arabs Got Talent رغم إنو برنامج مستنسخ الا ان نتائج المشاركات كانت معقولة وفي بعض الاحيان مفاجئة.. وقد تنوعت بين التشكيل والرقص الحديث والغناء الاوبرالي وفنون العرائس والكورال ..الا أن النتيجة فاجأتنا بفوز واحد مهرج كانت مشاركته بالشعر الحلمنتيشي الفج المصحوب بهز الوسط وبقصيدة يقول اهم مواضيعها (حاوسع بنطلوني ..)
نتيجة للأسف تعبر عن الواقع الثقافي العربي الراهن.. وليس غريباً أن يحدث هذا ولجنة الحكام يتربع على سدتها عمرو أديب..

Toscano had auditioned for American Idol twice before.[12] She made it through to Hollywood in Season 6, but her journey ended in the Hollywood solo round. In 2010, she auditioned for the tenth season of American Idol in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and was put through to Hollywood, this time making it through to the Top 24. She impressed the judges with her rendition of "I'll Stand by You" during the semi-finals, receiving the first standing ovation of the season and earning her a place in the Top 13. Randy Jackson commented that this was one of the most "amazing performances" on Idol in its 10 seasons.[13] In an elimination that viewers and media outlets have described as one of the most shocking in Idol history,[14] Toscano was eliminated from the competition on April 7, 2011, finishing in ninth place.

خروج بيا كان صدمة كبيرة.. هي الوحيدة التي تملك صوت قوي وأداء ثابت دون مشاكل في الpitch..
لكن بيا متمكنة في الـvocals فقط، حضورها الإستعراضي ضعيف جدا أو منعدم..

وهذا أعتقد ما أدى لإقصائها.. جمهور البرنامج والمصوتين فيه الكثير من المراهقين والشباب
الذين يرغبون في رؤية الفنان الشامل (the entertainer)
لكن بيا ستجد -دون شك- عقد مع شركة محترمة..
وسيكون هناك فريق لخلق حلقة الإستعراض الناقصة..
كايسي موهوب (صوته جميل جدا) ولكن في لونية معينة..
هيلي، بول، ثم ستيفانو..مفروض يخرجوا منذ هذا الأسبوع .. وبنفس الترتيب..
جيكوب فيه روح الgospel ربما طاغية اكثر من اللازم.. واتوقّع ان يؤدي هذا لخروجه مبكرا..
هذا البرنامج ليس ساحة مناسبة لمدرسة مثل مدرسة Luther Vandross وان كانوا من الققم الغنائية..
لورين.. موهوبة بالفطرة.. لكن صغر سنها ربما يضرها.. لا تبدو واثقة بصورة كافية..
جيمس.. لديه فرصة.. لموهبته وللونية التي يفضلها الشباب..
سكوتي.. أعجبتني أغنية الفيس.. لكنه أيضا محصور في الكنتري..
معذرة للإطالة .. وأهديك مقطع لبيا توسكانو تغني -في مطبخها- أغنية (Paparazzi) لليدي غاغا..

Results Recap For April 28, 2011

Hello and welcome to American Idol, The RESULTS! Tonight, six becomes five as one more person is sent home, ending their journey forever.

The show opens with Ryan showing Steven's magazine covers this week--People and Rolling Stone.
After a Charlie Sheen joke from Ryan, (DUH, winning!) we get a peek at Brit Week, where our Idol contestants are at a party with some members of the Royal Family, as well as some of the Hollywood Elite. CUTE!
The final six sing a medley of Carole King songs and I love how Scotty is sitting in the audience. The entire thing is actually very cute.
After a Ford video Crystal Bowersox takes the stage. She is adorable and I love her performance. She reminds me of a mix of Jewel, Faith Hill and Reba and I have no clue why. Regardless, it is a very good thing.
Some questions from the audience: Someone wants to know who Casey would duet with and he says Oscar Peterson.
Jacob discovered the range in his voice at about seven years old.
Lauren says the hardest thing about being a finalist and she says it is missing her family, especially with the tornadoes. She was worried about her brother and thankfully he is fine!
Scotty worked in a grocery store and at his mom's tanning salon pre-Idol.
James used to be in a few bands but also had side products.
Haley's favorite Idol contestant is Adam Lambert--although she loves Kelly, Lee and Crystal--she can go on and on!
Finally--some results! Haley is called to the stage first. She is SAFE!
Scotty finds out that he has to wait to find out where he stands.
Lauren also has to wait.....WHAT? First Scotty, now Lauren?
Casey is also waiting.....so are they all in the bottom three or are they just messing with us Dancing With The Stars style?
James is....SAFE!
Jacob is....told to wait while Scotty, Lauren and Casey are called to the stage.
Lauren is SAFE!
Bruno Mars performs their new single. While it is catchy, I'd be careful about where I sing parts of it, just saying.
More results....we now learn that Jacob is SAFE!
Casey and Scotty are now in the bottom two. After the nationwide vote, we learn that Casey is going home tonight. He is given a montage of his time on the show before he sings one last time and says goodbye. Aww, he shook the judges hands and gives hugs and kisses the audience. He is too adorable.
Cute moment between him and Haley too.....

Four weeks to go, the world will know who is the American Idol Season 10, but at this moment we are now down to the Top 5 idol hopefuls of this season: 2 girls (Lauren Alaina and Haley Reinhart) vs 3 boys (Scotty McCreery, Jacob Lusk and James Durbin)
The Top 5 theme for their performances on May 4, 2011 will be Now and Then. Every idol hopeful will perform 2 songs, 1 current song and 1 song from the 60′s. Amazing, isn’t it? I am looking forward for to see their performances. I want them to own the songs they will perform.
Meanwhile, during the result’s show, Jennifer Lopez and Lady Antebellum are set to perform on stage.

On Thursday's "American Idol" top five results show, Jacob Lusk went home, and given how things had panned out for him in recent weeks, this elimination was no huge shocker. However, if you were to rewind your DVR to about two months ago, you would've never expected this guy to only make it to fifth place. In February, Randy Jackson actually told Jacob that his "God Bless The Child" performance was the best in "Idol" history. Ever. Back then, it seemed Jacob had the potential to become the first R&B singer to win "Idol" in seven years..
So what went wrong? Well, I have a couple theories. While there was little doubt that Jacob had the pipes, some of the strongest pipes of the top 13, he never came across as current. Or cool. Just look at the swag-laden R&B charts these days. It's all about pop/hip-hop crossover acts like Drake, B.o.B., Jason Derulo, Chris Brown, Usher, et al; there's nothing in the old-school vein a la Luther Vandross, the singer to whom Jacob was constantly and perhaps excessively compared, and if Season 2 winner Ruben Studdard wasn't able to bring that style back, then Jacob certainly was doomed. But of course, when Jacob did try to modernize things and cover the Jordin Sparks/Chris Brown pop hit "No Air" this week, it was far and away his worst performance of the season, and it did him in. So I guess he was doomed either way. .
Still, doing one treacly, over-emotive, chest-beating power ballad after another, week after week, did Jacob no favors. Maybe he should have realized that being called a "diva" is not a good thing if you're a man. And maybe he shouldn't have worn weirdly patterned/colored suits so much, either. This is "American Idol," after all, not a job interview at Century 21..
Additionally, while Jacob usually came across as a jolly, effusive, all-around pleasant fellow (something we were reminded of during his exit video, a montage of him goofing off in a series of brightly colored anchorman blazers), occasionally he had "diva moments" that might have alienated viewers, who historically vote against anyone who comes across as cocky. Jacob's comment from a few weeks ago--"If I'm in the bottom three, it's not because I'm a bad singer, it's because America is afraid to look at themselves in the mirror"--however he intended it, was offputting, and I actually believe his decline in popularity began that night. Hopefully his fun and over-the-top exit-song performance this Thursday further reminded everyone of his more likable side..
As for the other contestant in the bottom two, it was the barely-16-year-old Lauren Alaina, and there was actually a part of me who wanted her to go, just to put her out of her misery. Her reaction to finding out she was in the bottom--her first time EVER on the chopping block--really showed her age. While Jacob, who'd obviously gotten used to the old elimination drill by now, was pretty stoic, Lauren was a tearful mess the moment her name was called. .
Lauren's thin-skinned behavior on the show, whether it was her clearly hurt reaction to Jimmy Iovine's critique of her "Unchained Melody" performance this week, or the way she bristled when anyone dared to call her anything less than perfect several times this season, made a good case for why lowering the "Idol" age limit this year was a bad idea. Let's face it, most 15- or 16-year-olds, especially ones from small towns who've been told all their lives that they're amazing and "The One," simply cannot handle the pressure of a competition like this. Lauren would have been wise to wait until she was 18 to audition, when her emotional maturity finally caught up with her voice..
As for the other 57 minutes of Thursday's elimination episode, there was plenty of the usual filler, like an extended skit in which "Hell's Kitchen" tyrant Gordon Ramsay had the kids compete to make the best omelet (yeah, because what I look for most in my future American Idol is the ability to fry eggs properly); an ickier Gordon skit in which the contestants were force-fed tofu while blindfolded (wait, I thought I was watching "Idol," not 9 1/2 Weeks); and a whole bunch of on-point commentary from Jimmy Iovine in which he said ev-er-y-thing the judges were either too clueless or too afraid to say the night before. (How come Jimmy isn't allowed to give his two cents on Wednesday nights, when it counts?) There was also a surprisingly decent "On The Floor" performance from judge J.Lo...and while it was hard to tell if Jennifer was singing live or lip-synching, either way she fared better than the five live-singing Idols who attempted to harmonize on a group performance of "Happy Together" and didn't sound remotely together at all. .
So there you have it. The final four on the floor are Scotty McCreery, James Durbin, Haley Reinhart, and Lauren Alaina, the latter of whom will hopefully be able to hold it together next week. It's really anybody's game--Scotty's the closest we have to a frontrunner this year, but in a season when someone as hyped as Jacob Lusk can suffer such a mighty fall, and someone like Pia Toscano can go home in ninth place, obviously nothing is guaranteed. .

'American Idol' Top 5 results: Jacob Lusk, Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery - who went home?By Andrea Reiher

The results are one of those shenanigans where here's one group (James Durbin, Haley Reinhart) and here's another group (Lauren Alaina, Jacob Lusk) and they make the nicest Idol pick the group that's safe (Scotty McCreery). Obviously, James and Haley were Top 2 and Lauren and Jacob were Bottom 2. Lauren is a mess waiting for the verdict, but she has nothing to fear as Jacob goes home.
Here are some highlights along the way:
•The group sing "Happy Together" and it's .... oof. Gimme the delinquents from "Ernest Goes to Camp" any day.
•"Be Yourself" is the call for the Ford Music Video and then there's a "Hell's Kitchen" segment, which is kinda funny. Lauren Alaina's omelet wins the competition, with Jacob coming in second.
•Lady Antebellum was on hand to perform their new single "Just a Kiss." It was OK, but it didn't grab me the way "Need You Now" did, or even "American Honey."
•There's a filler segment about song choice that tells us absolutely nothing, but the wardrobe segment is kinda funny.
•The second part of the "Hell's Kitchen" competition is between Jacob and Lauren doing blind taste tests. Lauren wins. It's dumb, they should've quit while they were ahead.
So did the right person go home? We think so. And we actually aren't too bothered by a Top 4 of Haley, Lauren, James and Scotty. Did you know that's the first Top 4 to have more than one female since Jordin, Melinda, Blake and Lakisha in Season 6? Wow.

'American Idol' Recap: Lauren Alaina, James Durbin Shine On Movie Night
Casey Abrams delivers a jazzy Nat King Cole tune, while Stefano Langone hopes it isn't the end of the road for him on 'Idol.'

She's gone but not forgotten. The ghost of Pia Toscano was everywhere on Wednesday's (April 13) "American Idol," from an opening montage reminding viewers that "every vote counts," to a poster in the audience that read "I miss Pia" to the mentors' many invocations of the eliminated finalist's name.
But Pia, alas, is gone and the show, as they say in Hollywood, must go on — in this case to Tinseltown itself. The theme was songs of the cinema, and like last week, we got a show with no bombs and a few blockbusters.
Paul McDonald kicked things off with Bob Seger's "Old Time Rock and Roll" from "Risky Business." Unlike Tom Cruise in that classic '80s flick, however, Paul didn't perform the song in his underwear, a tactic that would likely have assured the guy a spot in the finals. Nonetheless, he kicked the show off in style, a high-energy performance in which he ditched his guitar and sashayed around the stage but didn't succumb to the silly dance moves we've seen from him in the past.
The judges loved his rose-embroidered suit, loved his sax player, but more than anything else, they loved his energy. "I love your crazy, wild abandon," said Steven Tyler, while Randy argued America had just witnessed the opening number at a forthcoming McDonald concert.
Next up was Lauren Alaina, whom mentor Jimmy Iovine dubbed not only a better singer than Miley Cyrus but one capable of burying the Disney starlet's own rendition of "The Climb." What's more, Jimmy delivered a message to all of the viewers at home: Lauren's the contestant who deserves to gobble up Pia's voting bloc. Her ballad would certainly appeal to fans of the departed singer, though Lauren's tune was hardly as pitch-perfect as previous Pia songs. What Lauren delivered was a performance that was, in terms of emotion and comfort level on the stage, far superior to anything Pia had delivered.
"I love the tear you have in your voice. It's a cry. It's something that really transmits," Jennifer Lopez said. "You sang it so beautifully, so beautifully. You don't need to steal anybody's votes. You're getting your own."
It remains to be seen just how many votes of his own Stefano Langone will be getting. But during his cover of Boyz II Men's "End of the Road," he made a serious bid to attract enough support to stay safe for another week. He started off weakly, his vocals seemingly not up to the task of nailing the song's high notes. Yet as the music built, Stefano stepped up, letting loose vocally and showing more artistry than we've perhaps ever seen from him.
Predicting what Boyz II Men would soon tell him, Jackson said, "Your man Stefano just slayed the song." The other judges agreed. "This is so not the end of the road for you," Tyler said. "This is the beginning."
The same could be said of Scotty McCreery, who can do no wrong in the judges' eyes nor, it appears, in those of the public. The 17-year-old suggested he was going back to his country roots with George Strait's "I Cross My Heart," as if he'd ever strayed far from them. Call it returning to his strengths or continuing to exploit them — whatever the case, Scotty once again busted out a mature performance that could become a hit on country radio tomorrow. He even took a few more vocal risks than usual, including a sustained note at the finale that was easily three times longer than any other he'd belted out all season.
"Everybody wants us to be tough with you guys, but the truth is y'all are so damn good," Lopez said. "All I really want to say is wow. That was really good." Jackson seconded that assessment, and raised her one. "Look at this guy right here," he said. "A star is born on this stage."
Casey Abrams, rocking an ascot and a severely trimmed beard, followed Scotty onto the stage. He was unsure if he should sing Phil Collins or Nat King Cole, but ultimately went with a slow and jazzy take on Cole's "Nature Boy" that allowed him to whisper and growl and scat and, of course, slap some on the bass.
The judges certainly thought Casey made the right choice. They praised his artistry and the educational value of his music, comparing him to Norah Jones, Michael Bublé and Sting. "There's a place for this and there's a place for you. I thought it was genius," Jackson said, adding that "the world cannot live by pop stars alone. We need art to have that balance."
Haley Reinhart entered the evening riding a serious hot streak, and she delivered an arrow-straight rock performance with Blondie's "Call Me." Gone were the musical spaces in which she could show off those soulful growls. Here again, however, was a confident stage presence rivaled only by that of McDonald.
It wasn't enough to impress the judges, however. Jackson uttered the dreaded "karaoke" criticism, suggesting the song "wasn't a showcase" for Haley's vocals. Lopez backed up that sentiment, though she hesitated to ding her too much, lest the show lose another female. But ding her, eventually she did. "It wasn't the best. After two killer performances, baby, you got to just keep taking it higher and higher," Lopez admitted. "Let's keep it at that level."
Jacob Lusk, meanwhile, wisely decided to drop the level of hubris he displayed last week by, as Iovine put it, preaching to America about his own greatness. He dropped, as well, an instinct to deliver a corny performance and instead gave us a restrained take on Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water." Jacob started off shaky and unsure but finished in a big way.
Or as Randy put it: "Perfect, perfect, perfect harmony." "What happens to me when you sing is I believe you," he explained. "I listen to every word. A great singer takes every word and it comes out so special." Lopez concurred. "Those last three notes and how you fit in with the choir is incredible," she said. "So god bless you and god bless your voice."
James Durbin then stepped up to finish the show. "Give ####l a chance," he pleaded, after Iovine pretty much begged the kid to choose anything but Sammy Hagar's "Heavy ####l." What we learned during the performance is that Zakk Wylde (Ozzy Osbourne's guitarist) can wail on his instrument. What we didn't get a chance to review is Durbin's singing voice this week. To an even greater extent than Haley's song, "Heavy ####l" didn't give James much of an opportunity to show off vocal gifts beyond that familiar scream.
Not that the judges seemed to mind. "Outstanding, Durbin. You just had to get that out, didn't you?" Tyler told him. "I'm glad you went with your feelings." Jackson was equally pleased. "My god, you guys were just at a James Durbin concert," he said. "This is unbelievable, man. I'm glad you stuck to your guns. We always say to all of you kids, 'Do you.' Tonight you did you. Hopefully America will bring ####l back."
