MR. ROGER WINTER’S SPEECH AT THE 2ND NATIONAL SPLM’S CONVENTION
JUBA, SOUTHERN SUDAN
May 16th 2008
You have already heard from my friend Erin Tariot representing the US Government.
I am here to greet each and every one of you in the name the millions of individual Americans who care deeply about the people of Sudan and stand with you in your liberation struggle. As one American that has had over 27 years of involvement in Sudan, it is my association with the SPLM and SPLA that I am most proud of. I am amazed at how far you have come.
The third word in your name is LIBERATION. Liberation produces freedom and, as you know best, freedom is not free. The violence caused by a narrowly-based, partisan government in Khartoum produced 2.5 million deaths, nearly 5 million refugees and displaced people and the total destruction of the war-affected areas. But the vision of a New Sudan lives on. And the struggle continues.
In my brief comments, I want to make just a few points from this American’s perspective.
First, the vision of New Sudan is a vision of hope for all Sudanese, North, South, East, West and center, regardless of the outcome of the Referendum. If the referenda of 2011 leads to separation, those of you who go will never be truly free and your future will always be at risk so long as the rest of Sudan remains in political slavery. It is only when ALL Sudanese are politically free that you will be able to live for yourselves the words of American liberation leader Martin Luther King, Jr.: Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty, we’re free at last. Thus I am thrilled to see the solid NATIONAL REPRESENTATION present as delegates at this Convention today.
Secondly, in my own country, when we were fighting our own war of liberation, the American rebels had a saying that I encourage you to consider regarding the SPLM. It was: United we stand; divided we fall. There was also another: If we do not hang together, we most assuredly will hang separately. At this Convention, fierce intellectual debate is legitimate to produce a solid Party program and a winning approach to elections. But reasonable compromises may be required and egos may need to be tamed because any substantial disunity will kill the dream of New Sudan.
Thirdly, fourteen years ago Yousef Kuwa Mekki gave me the great honor of speaking to the first SPLM Convention in Chukaduum. Those of you who were there remember the conditions. With great regularity, you could hear the Antonovs circling, knowing the Convention was happening there, wanting to bomb it, but unable to find it. President Salva has already spoken today of that Convention’s historic impact for good that resulted from that Convention. Today, you are all its beneficiaries.
This Convention can also be a life-changing event for Sudan, influencing the lives of millions of Sudanese for the rest of their lives. Ladies and Gentlemen, this Convention is literally about YOUR future, it is about YOUR peoples’ liberation, it is about YOUR children’s lives. Outsiders can help, but their interests will not always be identical to yours. No one else can free you. AND YOU ARE ALREADY WELL ON THE WAY! You can see it. You can taste it. But it is not yet. Your job at this Convention, as I see it, is to do what is necessary to position the Movement to make it happen.
Finally, some of you have questions about America’s own upcoming elections and how they might affect my country’s interest in Sudan and the CPA. In a democracy like ours, Administrations come and go. Their commitment and support to your issues IS important. But, in a way, you have something even more important. You have won the hearts of the American people, and, in a democracy like ours, that can never be ignored by political leaders. As long as you remain unified and seriously pursue the vision of New Sudan, the American people will not let you down.
