March 1, 2008 — On Tuesday, February 27, a man of South Sudan’s origin shot dead his girlfriend in Arizona, United States. The man, now a United States citizen originally came from South Sudan’s Jonglei State. He has been in the United States since 2001 and holds a US citizenship.
This is not the first time a Sudanese man has killed his girlfriend in the States but for the Lost Boys, it is. Three years ago, a middle age Sudanese man killed his wife in Washington over allegations of adultery.
In 2004 in the Midwest, another man stabbed his wife and committed suicide, according to sources.
The deceased is a mother of four, ages 3-18.
The police arrested the man on the night of Wednesday, February 27 and appeared in court a few days later. His fate will be determined at a later date.
The killer and the victim's names have not yet been released to public.
The Lost Boys are a group of young men from South Sudan who left their homes in the late 1980s and took refuge in western Ethiopia. In 2000, the United States began to settle them in large numbers. There are close to 4,000 LostBoys in the USA. Others have settled to Canada and Australia.
Sudan has been at war with itself since 1955. In 2005, the Sudanese People Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) signed a peace deal with the National Islamic From/National Congress Party in Nairobi Kenya.
The peace gives South Sudan autonomy and a right for self-determination in a UN monitored referendum scheduled for 2011.
