Darfur in the memory of media and in the universal human rights system
In the framework of its yearlong campaign launched on August 9, 2007 under the title "Darfur before it's too late" aiming at putting an end to the suffering of the people of Darfur, the Arab Program for Human Rights Activists (APHRA), in cooperation with the Sudan and Nile basin studies program of the Ahram center for political and strategic studies, is going to hold its first local training course under the title "Darfur in the memory of media". The course aims at training 25 participants (lawyers, journalists, writers, researchers and media persons) on the universal human rights system and making them aware of the different dimensions of the Darfur crisis and the proposed ways to deal with it and to provide aid and support to the victims of armed conflicts in Darfur , especially civilians. The training course will be given in 27-29 November 2007 in the office of the Ahram center for political and strategic studies. Training will be provided by experts in the universal human rights system, media persons and human rights activists. Among those are Dr. Salah-Ideen Amer, Dr. Ibraheem Al-Nour, Mrs. Bosayna Kamel, Mr. Khaled Ghazi, Mrs. Tamra Al-Refai, Mr. Sabery Mohammad, and Mr. Hani Raslan. This condensed training course will last three days. The following topics will be covered: a general background of the dimensions of the Darfur crisis; universal human rights system and the Darfur crisis; the activities, interests and work mechanisms of the international red cross in the Sudan and Darfur; media coverage of armed conflicts from a human rights perspective (the example of Darfur); the role of civil society organizations in spreading the culture of the universal human rights system and the ways to apply and protect it; the concept of neutrality in media coverage; the protection of civilians and media persons during armed conflicts; and Darfur from conflict over recourses to conflict over identity.
