the bottom line is: raving about slavery and discrimination doesn't help much what matters are the practical steps to correct the wrong deeds and the terrible consequences of this repugnant inhumane practice. I'm not going to elaborate on historical or religious aspects of slavery. I whole heartedly condemn it as the most brutal religiously tolerated practice in Islam.
. But what interest me most are the practical steps taken to correct and alleviate the suffering of those people by slave owners or their descendants
. Dear Habani our generation should have played a very important part in the process of putting things on the right tract and I really wonder how come that some one like you or Bashasha haven't dealt with this issue in their family or community by practical actions . I tell you what had been done by my grand father and father who found these people to be part of their inheritance .I hold my grand grand - father to be a brute who had infringed on the basic rights of those people and deprived them of their natural dignity and freedom , a crime that I can't forgive nor absolve him of its guilt by asking their pardon or by his condemnation,though I fully understand the hisorical , social and
cultural contexts of his time .
1- Full integration of these people in the family, they have the same rights and obligations they are not just slaves they are part of the family we have the same name which means the same identity .
2- The freedom to do what they like with their lives. Migrating to the cities has enabled them to seek education , better jobs etc. which has a great impact on their social status
3- keeping away from them helps them to enjoy their new status, which means any contact to us is their sole decision because we felt that our contact causes them more harm than good ,not that we see anything wrong in having different features or colour or whatever difference but we have to adjust to our backward society because raving about it as you have noticed won't help much.
4-.Some of us moved to the cities we broke the tradition of intramarriages we got married to people from all parts of the Sudan of course Islam is still an obstacle , myself is a product of an intermarriage, we lost the purity assumed by our grandfather's generation ,now my family is a small Sudan all colours all features . Those who lived during the slavery era from both sides are dead we are the new generations our kids got married to their kids we have the same family name we don't tell them that their grand grand parent s were the slaves of our grand fathers . It's an ugly history and we are over it. . Those who prefere to keep away or go looking for their roots we don't deny them this right .
