Before condemning the artists we need to ask some fundamental questions: Do we understand music? Do we have the feel for "proper" music?
The other day I was listening to a recording of the special programme made by Sudan TV few years back (before the current stone age) on the commemoration of the late Ismail Hassan. The guest was Mohammed Wardi who openly said that some of his old songs were naive and he was embarrased by them in terms of music and words.
If we look at many of the songs and the music we consider now as the best, we will find that they were developed after the start of the Music and Drama Institute in Sudan. The initial progress may be considered as conservative but nevertheless it was new. I may count many examples but let me mention "Jamila wa mustahila", "alwood", and "Banadiha".
After the start of the Music and Drama Institute the quality of the songs and the performance changed. More professional musicians were on the scene and more was achieved by the singers.
There are many among us who never moved beyond the "Hagiba" and kept longing to those old day.
We may criticise the musicians but as listeners we need education and we need to learn. The majority of us listen to nothing apart from Sudanese songs then we claim that we are expert in music. How many of us listened Ali Farkatouri of Mali or Busi Mhlongo in her Urban Zulu songs? And let me be more up to date and say how many of us living in the UK listend to the free to view classic music concert that was broadcast by the BBC this evening? How many of us tried to experience by listening to the different Radio stations that provide different tastes of music?
I hope we continue this discussion so that we all get some education by learning from each other expertise and experiences.
