Dears Continuing on the theme of listner education, the major countries in the world always considered music as an integral part of the school curriculum. Children are taught music at a very young age and they are introduced to the different types of music. Although this introduction may be elementary but nevertheless it lay the foundations for better understanding of music and despite of the overwhelming following of pop, rock etc music by the young today, still many of them choose to make classics, opera, and other forms their preferred music. The introduction to music in schools is completely different from the forcible indoctrination in certain forms of music as used to happen in the former Soveit Union or currently in China. They are bases for appreciation for the majority and an introduction to learning music for those who choose to take it further. Unfortunately apart from the lack of resources, music in a country like ours fell victim to extremists ignorance and dogma. An environment such as that fostered by the previour director of Sudan TV is anything but conducive to music education. Yes I agree with some of the comments made that some new singers slaughtered some of the old songs but I have to say not all those who subjected old songs to new interpretation are failures. Those who slaughtered old songs are not successful at new ones either. Also part of our way we follow music we can take the case of Sharhabeel Ahmed. The style of Sharhabeel for 99% of the Sudanese is what define jazz for them, something far removed from reallity. Few examples from Louis Armstrong, Harry James, Dexter Gordon or Sonny Stitt can show the point. One other problem we have is that we can not separate the word from music. We tended to judge a piece by its words rather than its music and this lead us to consider songs as great while their music is horrible and vice versa. I do not agree with Tamadur that the listener is always the king when it comes to judging music because the listener is as good as the experience he/she had. To give you a simple example that I find it very difficult to listen to Um-Kalthoum or Farid al-Atrash while I love Abdl Halim Hafiz and enjoy Fairouz. This does not make Um-Kalthoum music bad but a reflection of my understanding of music. Let us continue. زكى
