22 October 2004
AL AIN — Residents of Al Ain are being fooled by SMS messages that are being sent to their mobiles claiming that they have won big prizes. “Surprise, you’ve won Riyals 50,000. In order to keep it please call 90001716” is a typically worded message that was recieved by scores of residents since the beginning of Ramadan.
Speaking to Khaleej Times, Loay Janim, information coordinator at Al Ain Model School, said that the mobile is a double-edged weapon; it is one of the important means of communication of the new millennium. “Several months ago I received an SMS claiming that I had won a prize and I only needed to call a specific number. I did, but afterwards I discovered that the cost of the call is more expensive than the prize I won.” he added.
He described it as a disturbing method and exploitation of the naive people, specially school students who carry mobiles and whose bills are being paid by their parents. Emad Al Haj, a newspaper secretary, said that “it is unethical that Etisalat should pass on the telephone numbers of their customers to companies.”
“I realised that nobody wins,” said Fatina Jabir, a creative writer. She highlighted that as soon as she received this kind of messages she deleted them because she knows the “game rule” well.
Nadia Um Ahmad, a nurse in Al Sad hospital, did not consider it a good method to gain money through the customers who are eager to win. She explained that these companies have studied human nature and the customers’ psychology very well and have therefore devised strategies for cheating them.
Rahma A Moziny, a journalist, stressed the important role of the media and the local Press to spread mass awareness in order to avoid such instances of cheating. She said that Etisalat should stop dealing with those companies that effect its reputation to regain customer’s confidence. She said that she realised that the voice she hears is always for women to attract teenagers. In addition, it is not good in Ramadan.
“I ignore those SMS, the targets are known to all,” said Amjad Dirgham, an officer at UAE University.
He added that it is impossible to pay Dh5 every minute you call, dozens of clients call every hour and you can imagine the huge profits!
