Early entry candidate for the 2004 NBA Draft. Born in the Sudan, then spent time in Egypt and London before settling in New Jersey to play high school basketball. Career Highlights: Named Third Team All-ACC and was a unanimous ACC-All Freshman selection. Named Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Atlanta Regional. One of only two players in the ACC to rank among the top 10 in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage and blocks. Named ACC Rookie of the Week six times. Named to the National All-Freshmen Team by Basketball Times, Collegeinsider.com and Rivals.com.
Senior (2003-04): Averaged 15.1 points (8th in ACC), 6.9 rebounds (7th in ACC), 1.3 steals and 1.1 blocks. Led ACC freshmen in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage. Posted six double-doubles. Led Duke with 19 points and 12 rebounds in the Final Four against Connecticut. Led all players with 19 points in the Round of Eight against Xavier. Scored a game-high 18 points against Illinois in the Sweet Sixteen. Scored a season-high 25 points against North Carolina. Tallied 14 points and a season-high 16 rebounds in the ACC Championship Game against Maryland. Had 22 points and 10 rebounds against NCAA runner-up Georgia Tech. Scored a game-high 20 points and had nine rebounds against Wake Forest.
High School: As a high school senior at Blair Academy, was named First Team All-America by Parade and USA Today. Selected to play in the McDonald’s High School All-America game, but did not participate because of an injury. One of 10 finalists for the Naismith Prep Player of the Year Award. Was Gatorade Player of the Year in New Jersey. Consistently ranked as the nation’s No. 2 prep player behind LeBron James. Averaged 23 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. As a junior, averaged 22 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Was a teammate of Connecticut’s Charlie Villanueva.
Strengths: Can score on the low block and has a decent mid-range game. Uses long and bulky frame to shut down opposing perimeter players. Demonstrates good court vision and solid ballhandling skills. Doesn’t mind mixing it up and has a strong work ethic.
Personal: An outstanding student. Member of the Dinka tribe that produces many of the tallest people in the world. Father, Aldo, served in the Sudanese parliament and became the country’s Minister of Transportation before moving to Egypt to avoid Sudan’s civil war. While in Egypt, he was taught basketball by Manute Bol, another member of the Dinka tribe. In 1993, Deng’s father was granted political asylum in England. One of nine children. Older brother Deng plays professional basketball in England. Another brother Ajou played college basketball at Fairfield. Sister Arek plays college basketball at Delaware.
