Dear All I do not want to depress those who want to remain reasonably optimistic. However, given the laxity of our parties after long years of political opposition, I see little hope in making a giant step towards defeating the Islamists for the following reasons: First, I am not sure of the SPLM delivering the goods, simply because of this huge leadership vaccum. Second, there is no guarantee for the Umma Party not joining the Islamists to form a solid religious front, particularly with al-Turibi maintianing his strong brother-in-law relationship with Imam al-Sadig. The Umma, the Popular Congress and the National Congress, all believe in Arab-Islamic Sudan. Muwlana Mohmmed al-Mirghani may not go with that alliance, but he will oscilate for sometime, especially the opportunists among the ranks of his DUP would push him towards the Islamists. However, the other Sudanese forces will finally prevail over Mowlana. This would have been easier if Garang were alive. Nonetheless, with weak leadership at the top, the SPLM could deliver at least 80% of the Southern vote (one third), and one of the Darfurian armed groups could be brought into the alliance. I am saying one because the other, JEM, is too Islamic to join a secular group like DUP, SCP, SPLM, SLM ect. Three yeare from now, there is some silver lining in the dark clouds of Sudan politics, three years from now.
