Quote: Election victims inspire Cairo protest Amr Emam Gazette staff Thirteen people gathered yesterday before the Supreme Court in downtown Cairo to mourn the victims of the latest parliamentary polls. Violence in the polls is reported to have claimed the lives of 13 people, while at least another 400 were injured. The demonstrators, clad in black, waved banners criticising the Government for alleged inaction and demanding that those behind the election violence be severely punished. One of the demonstrators said that they were demonstrating to mark the passage of 40 days since the death of the first victim in the parliamentary polls. "We will not keep silent; we are not afraid of anything or anyone," said Malik Mustafa, a 23-year old student and one of the demonstrators. "We want the families of the dead to be adequately compensated. These are innocent people who lost their lives only because they went to vote in the polls," he added, while police surrounded the protestors, without intervening.

About 50 people demonstrated in downtown Cairo as he spoke, some holding banners or portraits of Mubarak, his son Gamal and his key ministers that read: "All are thieves, thugs and criminals as well." The protesters were surrounded by hundreds of anti-riot police. Some critics have accused Mubarak of undertaking only token reforms and not fundamentally opening Egypt's political system. Mubarak, who has been in power since 1981, faced presidential challengers for the first time earlier this year, after a constitutional change that allowed opposition. But he won re-election easily in the September voting. The recent election violence flared after the Brotherhood, which is technically banned but fielded independent candidates, performed better than expected, winning 88 seats compared with the 15 it held in the outgoing 454-member parliament.
