Britain warns against Sudan travel

Britain has advised travelers to be very cautious at night outside towns.
LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Britain has warned its nationals against all but essential travel to Sudan amid continuing violence after the death of former southern rebel leader John Garang. "We advise against all but essential travel to Sudan until further notice ... the situation in Khartoum and South Sudan is very tense," the Foreign Office said in a statement.
It also advised against all travel to the Eritrean border.
Violence in Khartoum erupted on Monday when angry southerners took to the streets following the death in a helicopter crash of Garang, who fought the northern government for two decades before making peace.
Some northerners responded to the #####ng and attacks by forming vigilante groups roaming the streets.
The Foreign Office said tensions might be heightened as a result of Garang's funeral scheduled for Saturday and urged Britons to remain vigilant.
The violence has raised fears that fresh north-south tensions could undermine a January peace deal between Garang's former rebel movement and the Islamic northern government.
Britain also warned that banditry was widespread in the western Darfur region and advised travelers to be very cautious at night and when going outside major population entrees.
