Pope mends fences with Turkish Muslims
Papal trip might help pave way for Turkey's entry into EU, says Haroon Siddiqui

    HAROON SIDDIQUI

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
P ope Benedict did not put a foot wrong in Turkey. He couldn't afford to, carrying the heavy baggage of his earlier pronouncements on Muslims and Islam. He charmed his hosts with symbolic gestures and well-chosen words.

He even dropped his objection to Turkey's bid to enter the European Union. We don't know if he did so for reasons of tact or because he has had a change of heart. The reason matters.

Before becoming Pope, he had said, "Turkey should seek its future among Islamic organizations, not in the Christian-rooted Europe."

Does he still believe that Europe is a "Christian," as opposed to a Christian majority, continent? If he does, he negates its democratic foundations.

He also needs to clarify his positions on three other issues:

He is understandably concerned about those Christians in Muslim nations who are denied freedom of religion and, in some cases, persecuted.

But in calling for "reciprocity" — same rights for Christians in Muslim nations as Muslims enjoy in the West — the Vatican implies an equivalency between democracies and, say, Sudan.

We treat minorities (Jews, Hindus, non-whites, whoever) the way we do — not perfectly but decently — because that's our fundamental democratic value. It's not a bargaining chip.

Meanwhile, thinking Muslims should support the Pope's advocacy on behalf of Christian minorities.

He reportedly thinks that one cannot have a rational dialogue with Muslims because they believe the Qur'an is God's word which cannot be changed.

That they believe. But they also believe that while the scripture is immutable, its understanding and interpretation is human.

That's why they have been arguing over their scripture for 1,400 years, and have produced four schools of jurisprudence, with different rules for rituals. How can the Pope not know that?

He also seems to subscribe to the populist notion that Islam was spread by the sword. He suggested so in quoting a Byzantine emperor that Islam was violent, evil and inhuman.

The Pontiff has since offered a series of "I'm-sorry-you-misunderstood-me" apologies. But he is yet to say outright that he does not share that distorted view.

He is right to call for "frank" and "authentic" dialogue. But it has to be a learned debate, not a recycling of popular prejudices.

As Turkey's top cleric told him, careless statements only feed Europe's rampant Islamophobia, which is at the heart of the opposition to Turkey's entry into the European Union.

Last week the EU suspended eight of the 35 areas of negotiations over the issue of Cyprus.

It demanded that Turkey open up its ports to Greek Cypriot ships. Turkey won't do that until the EU lifts its long embargo on northern Turkish Cyprus.

A European diplomat, who has been following the negotiations, told me: "It seems some Europeans are trying to frustrate Turkey into abandoning its bid."

That's what some Turks want, too. Islamists want Turkey to turn to the Muslim world. Right-wing nationalists fear that joining the EU would lead to too much freedom of speech, too many human rights for the Kurds and an acknowledgment of the Armenian genocide.

The nationalists include those secularists who think, like some Europeans, that being secular means being anti-religious.

Both the Islamists and the nationalists were in the forefront of the anti-Pope protests; one, because he is Christian, the other because he is both a man of faith, any faith, and a European.

The nationalists constitute the core of the Turkish elite and are concentrated in the military, the judiciary and the bureaucracy.

They have been the driving force behind a raft of charges against writers, academics and intellectuals, including Nobel Laureate Orhan Pamuk, for "insulting Turkishness."

The Islamists and the nationalists think that moderate Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan is caving in to EU demands.

Thanks to his sweeping reforms, the economy is booming and a social reformation is underway. But he is undermined every step of the way by his domestic enemies at home and Turkey's enemies in Europe.

No wonder that public support for joining the EU is eroding. And businesses, tired of waiting for Europe, have increased trade with Muslim neighbours by a third in the last six years.

Turkey has always been the bridge between the East and the West.

It is important in this age of Muslim terrorism and the deteriorating relations between the West and Muslims that the fourth most populous Muslim nation be welcomed in Europe.

The Pope's triumphant tour has been a welcome step in the right direction.
