Dear Sami, Some medications, such as those for the treatment of diabetes, high blood pressure, etc could be dangerous to take if the patient doesn’t have the specific medical condition since they will lead to lowering blood glucose or blood pressure ( for example) below the normal level and that can lead to serious problems. However, antimicrobial agents (treatment for bacteria and malaria, etc) don’t cause such problems. That is, if there is a disease there, they may cure it, if not, no harm could be done (other than the known side effects that one might get any way, and of course the costs of the drug and the resistance problems, etc.). Having said that, it is important to stress here that medical mistakes -either as a wrong diagnosis or wrong medication or even poor follow up of certain parameter (Blood pressure, blood glucose, etc.)-are not acceptable and should be confronted.
Dear Sami,
Malaria in Sudan is one of the most dangerous diseases, not only because of what it might cause, but also because it may mask many other medical conditions. On one hand, the malaria test (blood film for malaria) is not always positive when there is actually malaria and if the symptoms indicate so, then treatment should be started (this is careful generalisation, as many factors should be considered). Remember, the likelihood for the malaria to be the cause for fever in Sudan is very high. On the other hand, many of the symptoms associated with malaria are not only confined to MALARIA, and the doctor should never be 100% sure that he got the right diagnosis.
