African Republic closes border with Sudan over Chad rebellion
BANGUI, April 14, 2006 (AFP) - The Central African Republic (CAR) has closed its border with Sudan in order not to "facilitate an attack against Chad from its territory", the top aide to CAR's foreign minister said on Friday.
"The government took the decision to close the borders between the Central African Republic and Sudan," Paul Bellet told AFP.
CAR Foreign Minister Jean-Paul Ngoupande had officially announced the measure to Sudan's ambassador in Bangui on Wednesday, he added.
The CAR lies to the south of both Chad and its eastern neighbour, Sudan.
"Considering the active and fraternal cooperation linking Chad and the Central African Republic, it is out of the question for the Central African Republic to facilitate in any way an attack against Chad from its territory," Bellet said.
A source close to the CAR defence ministry said 21 pick-up trucks carrying armed men had illegally entered CAR territory on two occasions in a bid to reach Chad.
Chad broke off diplomatic relations with Sudan on Friday, accusing it of arming rebels who had tried to storm the capital N'Djamena in an attack that killed an estimated 400 people.
