Dear Ms Tawir
I had prepared a long comment on your post, but when I tried to post it, I lost it and could not retrieve it.
In any case, I will try my best to summarize that long answer to the best of my recollection. I had waited this long in order to follow the direction of your thoughts. I also waited this long in order to have a reasonable comment that does not unecessarily infringe on the rights of our Nuba people.
The justice of any political and military struggle is not measured by the results of its outcome. The outcome is not a process of 1+1=2. The results of any struggle may sometimes be so much unsatisfactory that they can generate depression or absolute despair, particularly if the person evaluating them had a preconceived out come that turns out not to be. Generally, your comments under your post, which I roughly translate as follows: "Where has Her Majesty Naivasha Reached". Under that title, your comments about the South , the SPLM/A and Dr. John Garang are so sarcastic to an extent that I do not believe they are being made for more understanding of what took place over the last twenty years. I could not distinguish your comments from the Arab-Islamic elite condescending attitude towards the South and Southerners, and for that matter, the Nuba. Perhaps, the purpose of your post was to gain some sympathy from the Arab-Islamic elite, and comments by the members of this Board prove my point. As a Nuba intellectual or any other Nuba, you are entitled to your opinion about southerners, the South , the SPLM/A or Dr. John Garang.
You know from the history of the Sudan over the last fifty years that Southerners began fighting the hegemony of the Arab-Islamic elite since 1955. In that war, they fought alone, only supported by their brothers from Abyei. The rest of the "Black Sudan", meaning Darfur, Beja and the Nuba were just on-lookers or sometimes fought effectively on the side of the enemies of the South. When Addis Ababa came, Abyei people were left in the cold, despite their secrifices in blood. However, this did not generate in the people of Abyei any despair or bitterness--I know this because Iam from Abyei--but made them more determined to join the SPLM/A in large numbers and fought with more determination. Even this much heralded peace may not change their status. I know for a fact that it will require some miracle for the NIF to accept the Abyei Boundaries Commission Report.
Since 1984, the Nuba had joined the SPLM/A in their thousands. They were attracted by the policies the SPLM/A and its leader Dr. Garang, which pronounced that this time round the fight is not about separation of the South. The war would be about "New Sudan"--a secular, pluralistic, democratic Sudan, a new Sudanese political dispensation that would take care of Sudanese historical and contemporary diversities. In your post you intimated and insinuated that the SPLM/A and its leader might have deceived the Nuba into a southern war. I do not believe that you are correct. Leaders like late Yusuf Kowa Mekki could not fall for credulity or guillibility of anyone, including Garang. I think the Nuba joined the SPLM/A on principles. Nor do I think the joined with precpnceived ideas about the final outcome. Moreover, there was no doubt about the sincirty of Garang was in doubt . Garang message to Southerners had always been the unity of Sudan, but not any unity. The peoples of Nuba, Ingessana and Abyei knew about it throughout the 15, twenty years of struggle.On the 22nd anniverssary in Rumbek of the founding of the SPLM/A, he articulated this point and told southerners, and I quote: " I Cdr. Dr. John Garang de Mabior is delivering this message again and again, please pay close attention for you to understand it very clearly: I and those who joined me in the bush and fought for more than twenty years, havew brought to you the CPA in a golden plate. Our mission is accomplished. It is now your turn, especially those who did not have the chance to exoperience bush life. When time comes to vote at the referendum, it is your golden choice to determine your fate. Would you like to vote to be second-class citizens in your own country? It is absolutely your choice." This is a clear evidence of two things: first, that Dr. John somehow sensed his end and wanted to advice his people, because leaders of his stature want to leave a message for guidance; second, he very well knew about the history of agreements in the Sudan. He did not tell the people of the South that if the issues of the Nuba, Ingessana, Beja, Abyei or Darfur, have not been satifactorily resolved, you should through yourselves into fire and vote for unity. It is like drinking poison for the sake of experiment. It also suffice that John Garang had shown us what the struggle means, and we should be thankful to him in his grave.
Your other argument is about the crimes allegedly committed by the SPLM/A against the Nuba people and yor equating SPLM/A with the NIF. There is nothing outrageous and farther from the truth than this statement. It can only be raised by people who hate the South or have an axe to grind with southerners and the SPLM/A for what they stand for. It cannot be raised by an intellectual who does not or is assumed not to know the history of Sudan in last fifty years. We have all read the human rights reports, and I have not come accross any report about the crimes of the SPLM/A in the Nuba areas that can rival the NIF. In any case, I am not saying that SPLM/A can prove its innocence, but the notorious human rights abuses of the NIF against the people of the Nuba cannot be compared with anyone. I know SPLM/A had committed heinous crimes in the South more than anywhere elsein the Sudan. However, the silence of the peace agrement does not necessarily mean the legalization of impunity is complete. This area can be revisted in the future as there is no time bar for human right offences. I have sevral times and on several ocassions raised these issues with SPLM leadership, their explanation was that it was not their wish but was forced on them by the international community, which saw it would give undue lophole to the NIF to escape from making any agrement.
The other issue is your rehtorical question about why SPLA is still keeping the Nuba members of the SPLA. Honestly, I do not have an answer for this question. I can only speculate. I guess the Nuba are there perhaps for there on their own wish or desire. I do not think they are being coerced to remain in the ranks of the SPLA. Nor is SPLA planning another go it; it is not in their cards to wage another war, unless it is forced on them. For instance, come 2011 and they are denied the right to vote, by whoever, in a referendum that would be their bottom line. The NIF can play around with the rest of the provisions of Naivasha, but not with RSD. I guess this should be enough to make me enter your post for further dialogue.
