Dear Yassir,
Allow me a few words in response!
Disbanding a political Party to pursue what you deem to be substantive goals is an interesting spin on a very hot debate! However, political organization remains the norm rather than the exception through out the world because this gives the message coherence, durability! Your call is the exception to political conventional wisdom.
Arraying intellectuals in the manner you advocate has more to do with proselytizing than the business of politics and its organizations! Political parties tend to have specific and detailed political platforms to affect social change using specific means. Seldom would you find a significant and a durable one that has a single agenda be it legal, religious, social or political!
I would caution against over investing on the idea of intellectuals as sole stewards of freedom! They are not impervious to the struggle over social entitlements! They use their intellect to justify their vision and sometimes their conduct! Our own history shows that the neutrality or apolitical(ness) of said intellectuals was a political read herring! How many succumbed to the allure of despotism in the hope short-circuiting our own social dysfunction only to fail at great cost to their own person!?
Those who join the SCP are not duped nor is its real character a great secret that will one day rise to strike them like a bolt of lightening forcing them to flee in all directions. Marxism will remain part of the SCP’s future. How it will be used – exclusively or in as part of multidisciplinary approach to politics and social phenomenas is what the ongoing debate will sort! Interesting to note that for the SCP the role of democracy and multiparty rule were settled and endorsed unequivocally in 1977. So, the current debate is not attempting to answer that specific question!
The communist ideal of egalitarianism and social justice is hard to circumvent! Those who share a particular aversion to those ideals are simply encouraged to assure that egalitarianism and social justice are achieved – for only then will they render those ideals irrelevant - otherwise this struggle will continue unabated regardless of the political tag that is attached to it!!
The collapse of the Soviet Union and its satellite states is a tumultuous event, but it should not stampede those concerned into premature conclusions that are either convenient or/and premature!
The fragility of our political system/organizations is a function of our social fragmentation. The only way to guard against intellectual or physical political ambushes lies in more coherent organizations that are democratic!
Allow me to suggest that the issue you are about is not the exclusive domain of political parties, but rather civil society at large – something we lack. A vibrant civil society is one that is not subservient to political parties, but rather it is one that promotes the rule of law and protects basic freedoms – when needs arise it will act as part of a grand alliance to achieve specific goals!

Ps: I would agree that political activism is not for every intellectual - some are simply ill-suited and unprepared to pay the cost!
