Dear Maman,
Salam,
I was writing this letter filled with emotions, nostalgia and homesickness. This morning I read your post in Sudaneseonline about Sudanese women. When you mentioned the women of Alsoulaab, then I thought it was you Maman, the university student who came 30 years ago with his friends of Jam3iayat Tatweer Alreef to build the secondary school in my own village, Alsouloab - by the way we have website now. Because of your closeness to our grassroots and to the ordinary villagers and because of your unique name, every villagers new you by name and they still tell stories about you and your friends. I was a little boy then. I saw how useful a university student could be. I remember very well when I dreamt to be a university graduate: it was the time when everybody in the village came to help you in putting the roof for the school. I did in fact go to the University of Khartoum. And during my career, I met one of your favorites: Mohamed Badi, my class mate and best friend; he always reminds me of you.
I am crying now because few months ago we lost the veteran Itahdi and the dean of Alsoulaab leaders, Ahmed Altayeb Alhamadi and few years ago my father, Abdalla Eltoum, both of whom were instrumental in getting your society to come build our school. Thanks a lot Maman for the inspiration you give it to me and many of Alsoulab University graduates, who are many now and they are scattered all over the world.
Isam
