A poem by Osama Salih From Naffaj ____________
The Best Things
I saw a black bird as it built its nest It worked so hard at this physical test Not once did it waver or doubt the parental sense Of toiling so hard, not for dollars or cents
I tasted an apple right off the tree And knew that the tree had meant it for me I was doing it a favour by spreading its seed Or else the tree would have charged a fee I heard a bee as it buzzed around a flower It came in to land and conserve its power It hopped to the next, and let the pollen shower Would knowing it was being used, make it charge by the hour? I smelled the honeysuckle at the fading of the bee’s voice And the Majesty of Creation made me openly rejoice That this joint effort was done through free choice Would I have felt the same if the bee sent an invoice? I felt the heat of the Sun warm the day And let it glow on my face as on my back I lay I wonder how many could feel at peace in this way If to enjoy the Suns rays they had to pay? I guess what my five senses were trying to tell me Was something my sixth sense could clearly see That the Heavens themselves did decree The best things in life are truly free _____________________ Osama Salih Naffaj
