Cornel West quoted Ustaz Mahmoud M Taha is his book ( Democracy Matter) Speaker ranks Islamic reformer with Gandhi, King, Mandela Athens NEWS Staff Jan 20, 2009 0 In his address Sunday in Athens, Cornel West paralleled the Sudanese political figure Mahmoud Mohamed Taha with other more widely known social reformers such as Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Nelson Mandela. Speaking on Taha's steadfast ideals of social justice, equality and peace, West declared, "That's why I shiver when I think or talk about my dear brother Taha… That's why Taha, King, Gandhi and Mandela stand out!"
This weekend West gave the keynote address at Ohio University's conference of "100 Years of Progressive Islam," a forum honoring the life of Taha, who was executed by the Sudanese government in 1985, and his ideas of social and political reform through Islam.
West gave his speech Sunday afternoon to a packed house in Baker Center's main ballroom.
West, a widely known public intellectual and Princeton University professor, was invited to give the address in part because of comments he wrote on Taha's movement in his best-selling book "Democracy Matters: Winning the Fight Against Imperialism."
West wrote, "Taha conceives of Islam as a holistic way of life that promotes freedom - the overcoming of fear - in order to pursue a loving and wise life… Taha's conception of the good society rests upon economic equality, political equality and social equality."
