A Blessing in Disguise

Sympathy was going to kill me before curiosity, even though to my almost complete positivity that she was insane, she kind of scared me. The fact that the big cheerful smile of hers never rests is very puzzling, it is as if she is not the one with the most tragic and heart breaking history I have ever heard.
Her name was Maryam. It was a warm morning in our little village when I went out before sunrise to gather the crops. I ended up watching her and her husband happily milking their cow. If not for the devastating permanent proof that covers her body, I would not have believed it was her. I began to wonder and daydream as her story rewound in my mind.
It is said that in a city nearby our village she lived like royalty, for her dad was a very famous businessman who owned fortunes, and as much as the money she maintained because of her dad was the beauty she possessed from her mom. Maryam’s long black curly hair ended up with the end of her back and was so full people joked that you can lose something in it. She had a very rare light brown skin color that was one step away from white, her tall slim figure made her big eyes even bigger and the eyelashes on them that would make any camel jealous, made them mesmerizing. She didn’t really need that perfectly curved eyebrows, but she had them and people swore that she never wore lipstick, but it is hard to believe for she had blood red lips. Every girl that saw her wanted to be her and every man wanted to marry her. It seemed that maryam was going to have the best of everything and her destiny will be nothing
short of perfect, but it is true that no one knows your fate before it happens but god and you can never be sure of your plans.
For one morning, like maraym, you can wake up into a totally different life as a completely other person with new expectation of the future.
It was a silent night in the city, before her home started to erupt in violent flames. Room by room the fire started to consume the whole house and up to now no one knows how it started. People gathered around to watch but no one stepped up to help, but a poor man who came to the city to sell his milk. His heart couldn’t tolerate it anymore, for that family always paid him so much more than his milk cost and gave him a cold #######ing drink before he continued his journey. He wrapped himself with the sheet that covered his bottles of milk and ran inside without thinking twice of what he is doing . After a long while when the fire men finally came, the milk man was out, but only with the young girl. That night both her parents died, her large house turned into ashes, all her body melted like a candle as her burned hair fell to the ground all at once. If the smoke and the heat didn’t disconnect her brain from the world, god knows how her feelings would have been at that time.
She spent almost a month unconscious in a hospital bed and as the days passed by, her father’s wealth shrank little by little, until nothing was left .On the day Maryam opened her eyes all that stood was the poor man who saved her. When the sun rose and my senses came back to me I realized that she was heading towards me and my body froze.
“Act normal.” I told myself.
“Here”, she said smiling while handing me a cup of milk
I silently took it with a nod that meant thank you.
“Were you watching me؟” She asked. “Do you fear me؟”
“No.”I lied, I was freaking out.
“You seem like you have lots of questions.” she sounded as if she was talking to herself more than to me.
I took a sip of the milk because I didn’t know what else to do as she stared at my eyes while she searched my soul.
“You heard the story, wonder if it is all true and if it is, why am I so happy and why do I smile so much؟” I didn’t know if she was answering herself, or asking me a question.
She knew and it was burning inside me, I had to let it out.
“Is it all true؟”I asked giving up.
“Yes.” she answered and waited for the next question, like she knew what it was.
“Then why do you look so happy؟”
I continued and her smile got bigger.
“What should I do then, lock up myself in a dark room and stay depressed until I die. “I was confused.
“Do you think I can go back in time and undo the fire؟ "I shook my head for no, so she went on.
“Then I should accept it because it is written for me by god and be thankful for what I have. It was a hard test and It took me a long time to understand, but now I believe that everything happens for a reason and
god knows how my life would have been without that fire, but he chose it and I trust him.”
I was thinking deeply, so she took my hand, looked into my eyes and told me words that I don’t think I will ever forget.
“Look kid, one day something really dreadful is going to happen to you, am sorry, but you are a human and it is inevitable, you can suffer deeply and turn your life to hell, or you can choose to stay strong and trust in god and then that dreadful thing whatever it is will turn into a blessing in disguise and become the greatest lesson and one of the greatest gifts in your life. I Pray that my parents will go to heaven and that the fire purified them of every sin and I am so grateful to have such a good heart as a husband and if he and god think I am beautiful why should I care for the world’s opinion. God will not send any pain to a human that is higher then their capacity. It is not easy, but I will stay hopeful and go on as best as I can, for my life is not yet over and this is my fate.”
