This is the work of one of the English Language Contestants who won the 4th place**************Rayyan Omer Musa Winner of the 4th place, The Ghada Award English Writing Prize _______________________________________________________ Summary of Topic: This is a story of three young children who grew up in an orphanage in the slums; Brock and Hector and Maria. It mainly focuses on Brock and Hector, all grown up and serving in the army and the trials they go through when their friendship is tested as old bitter feelings surface. The moral of this story is to become aware of the destructive abilities of jealousy. Trials' of Life Boots crunched through wet grass, bright with morning dew. The air was too cold, misting in front of Brocks mouth as he trudged through the vast landscape. He could just make out his old friends figure, marching in tandem with the rest of the group of soldiers. Hecter had been his friend since as long as he could remember, they had grown up in the same orphanage, running through the dirty streets and playing together. Their friendship hadn't changed, until Maria came into their life. She had been a skinny thing, abandoned by her parents on the front door of the orphanage. She wouldn't look at anyone or speak for months but she always followed him and Hector when they would go out to play, quiet and never making a sound, simple presence. "Hey." Brock was ripped out of his musings by his long time friend’s voice, Hector. He had come to walk next to him. Brock grunted in reply. For a while now all he felt when he looked at his friend was bitterness as he wasn't the one with the wedding band on his left finger, while Maria had the other on her finger. Hecter took his unenthusiastic response as fatigue and continued, barely noticing the distance his friend was making between them. "This trek is taking too long, I told Maria I would be back two days ago, and she's probably worried sick. With the baby I can't have her being stressed." Brock kept his eyes to the horizon, willing the surge of jealousy down. It was him who should be saying these things, not Hector. Yet his friend continued to be oblivious as usual. Hector continued, "Look, I know a quicker way back, it'll take a few hours at most, but we'll be home before sundown." Brock frowned and said, "If we leave it'll be trouble for us." However Hecter persisted. "We'll say we got lost, let’s just get home." The thought of getting back to their town was appealing; especially what with the direction and rate their group was going they wouldn't be home until after midnight. "Alright, let's go." They slipped away under the camouflage of the nearby trees, their commander too busy yelling at a couple of rookies to notice their absence. They walked through unfamiliar greenery for a while, Hector sure of the way, an uncomfortable silence between them. At least, it is uncomfortable for Brock. Soon the silence was filled with Hecter talking about the different types of trees and plants around them. He'd always been interested in botany. Reading all the books in their deserted library back in the orphanage. Brock only used to join them because of Maria's interest in hearing Hecter read. He was the only one out of all three of them who could at that time. Perhaps if Brock had been able to read... Suddenly there was a large crack and Brock looked up just in time to see his longtime friend fall through a large bear trap, a deep and deadly pit. Brock ran, careful not to get to close and found his friend grasping a loose branch, the only thing saving him from certain death. He reaches his hand out to Brock, wedding ring glinting in the sunlight. Brock hesitates. He imagines going home, telling Maria of the awful news, that her husband was dead. So tragic. He imagines being there for her helping her through the difficult times. Then maybe, just maybe she would notice him. Look at him in gratitude. Forget about Hecter. Hecter notices to hesitation in the friend’s eyes, and sees the way he stares at his wedding ring and suddenly after all these years understands, feels the bitterness emanate from his old friend. Then he feels a hand grasp his, and for a second is sure Brock is going to toss him over, but then he's pulled up into safety. They take a second to catch their breaths and get on their feet. Brock looks at Hecter warily, waiting for the anger, for something. But Hector just looks at him with an unreadable expression and picks up his pack and walks on. What had he almost done؟ After a few seconds Brock follows. They walk in silence, their town just on the horizon. Brock assumes that this is the end of their friendship. He doesn't know what to think. Still trying to understand the severity if what he almost did. He almost let his friend die, out of jealousy. He feels sick. He understands if Brock never spoke to him again; never let him near his house again, near Maria. Suddenly, he hears his friend gasp in horror and his head snaps up and he looks to the horizon, where dark smoke rises up from the direction of their town. They run desperately. Hoping, praying, please, please, please- Their entire town, their entire life, is complete wreckage, destroyed. Bomb shells scattered everywhere and houses lying in rubble, blackened from fire. There are officers walking around from the next town over, looking through the wreckage for any sign of life. The place where Hester’s house was situated is buried under the remains of two other houses. One of the officers comes over. "I assume this is your home." He says his eyes down cast. His uniform is covered in soot and his hands bloody with scrapes from lifting the rocks. "I'm sorry, but there are no survivors." Brock can barely hear him over Hector’s sobs, his mind strangely blank.
