The woman of the sea (Kane, 1995) pg. 53
The story is told in the “Celtic coast lands, and Scotland, Ireland and Wales” (Kane, 1995) pg 173. Similar version of the story are also known in the Denmark http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selkie
What is unusual with the story is its end where the woman of the sea left her good husband and three children in the shore and sank in the sea accompanied by a large seal. So she is not the powerless pretty woman that is usually found in folktales generally, she is a woman who decides her destiny regardless to the good husband or the abandoned children. She just went after she found her hidden seal skin which is found by her three children under the stacks of hay while they were playing.
The man in the story is a young hard-working man looking after his farm and his sheep in the Island of Unst in Northern Scotland according to Alice Kane version of the story. This man saw the people of the sea dancing in the sand at the beach in a full moon lit midsummer night, people of the sea are transparent with skins colored like the moon and do not cast shadows on the ground! In physics transparent means see through and the moon as seen by everyone has an off-white color. Here there is confusion from the type that can be understood in the historic context of the story. The story belongs to the beginning of the Christian history in Scotland because the wedding of the abducted woman and the Scottish farmer took place in front of a priest in a church.
Through the story the listeners will find justifications for the man as he deceived the woman of the sea and hid her seal skin and because he will not give in exchange the treasures of the sea for a pretty, transparent joyfully dancing woman of the sea. The seal skin is the only way or mean by which she can rejoin her people in the safety of the bottom of the sea. The myth of the selkie, see below:
“A common element in all the selkie-folk tales, and perhaps the most important, is the fact that in order to shape shift they had to cast off their sealskins. Within these magical skins lay the power to return to seal form, and therefore the sea.
If this sealskin was lost, or stolen, the creature was doomed to remain in human form until it could be recovered. Because of this, if disturbed while on shore, the selkie-folk would hastily snatch up their skins before rushing back to the safety of the sea.” http://www.orkneyjar.com/folklore/selkiefolk/
Woman abduction was accepted in the past , the story provides a way to reject it and that appears clearly by the unusual end of the story where the woman of the sea just went leaving her good husband and three innocent children. Woman abduction is similar to enslaving in both practices offenders use either massive force or deception to do it because as part of human nature no single person will willingly lose her/his freedom to someone else .So here is one of the lessons the folktale is trying to say i.e. let us look at the woman of the sea with respect although she left her husband and her abandoned children in the shore and went to rejoin her people or worked in coordination with a helping large seal to regain her stolen freedom.
One of the important issues Alice Kane mentioned in her notes about the story is that “Celtic coast lands, and Scotland, Ireland and Wales have family names whose bearers claim a seal in their ancestry” pg 173. In Sudan some cultures the Massaleet in Western Sudan and the Shuluk in the South White Nile do not claim animals in their ancestries but think that their Great grandmothers and grandfathers have the ability to shape #### to wolves and crocodiles respectively. That means people select an animals from their environment to give it totemic qualities.
In the story the woman of the see liked the peat fire and saw it like dancing jewel may be because her people do not have fire in the bottom of the sea, according to the story people love things that are new to them here also is away to be inspired by what others have and to love it. Another point is that is the man thinks the bottom of the sea is cold although the woman of the sea corrected him repeatedly but he does not want to listen as all men would do with their abducted wives may be! And finally for a woman a good husband, beautiful children and happy family living could not be a reason for her to lose her freedom for some one. It’s a great story.
