Professor Jok is describing with a symmetric precision the failure-prone process of la rage de voulvoir conclure, that is the tendency to reach compromises at any cost without addressing the core issues. This has always been the tendency of the so-called mediators whose lack of understanding of the complex psychological and social inadequacies which are part of our idiosyncrasy is disturbingly problematic. Foreign initiatives and solutions tend to end the immediate crisis but with adverse effect on the future. South Sudanese civil societies which are immersed in all levels of our society should be part and parcel to the current talks in Addis.

There is this to be said, though:
There is, in theory, a direct and casual relationship between people’s participation in politics and the level of human dignity. The latter has never been our so-called leaders’ concern. Our people are waist deep in trouble and an autonomous move to effect political change by the people is an unlikely scenario. I think, a grassroots mobilization by civil society groups is perhaps the answer.
