The family of the Sudanese arbitrary detained activist Bushra Gamar, who is being held by Sudan’s National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) in Kobar prison- Khartoum North, since 25th June 2011 and whom the authorities in Khartoum could not established any evidence to warrant his continued detention for a whole year; has been informed that the critical health status of Bushra Gamar had forced the prison authorities to take him to the General Police Hospital at Khartoum on Sunday, May 13 2012. He has been diagnosed with hemorrhoid, peptic ulcer and a severe lower limb pain and numbness as complications of a severe disc prolapsed at L5 &4. He has been given medications and the possibility of a disc operation was also discussed. In addition to that Bushra is a known cardiac patient confirmed by the NISS’ physician earlier this year. It is to be noted that Bushra has been subjected to torture. The disc prolapsed is as a result of extended hours of standing up right, interrogation, beating till he has gone into coma, and lying on a hard ground throughout his detainment. He has been kept in hanger with bad ventilation facility. He also been subjected to a psychological torture and insults such as one of the NISS officer said to him “you slave, you are not human being you deserve a bullet on your head”, this coupled with the longstanding stress has resulted into the peptic ulcer and hemorrhoid. Keeping him under detention in such poor condition will no doubt deteriorates his health and justify the fears and concerns of the family on him. We therefore urge all national and international human rights organizations and individuals to put a maximum pressure on the Sudanese authorities and calling for the immediate release of Mr. Bushra, human rights defender.
