  | Re: This message was sent to Amnesty International (Re: ست البنات) | | Message from Faisal Mohamed Saleh

 Dear Friends

I wanted to brief you on what I have been a touch over the ten days of the harassment and prosecution Omnahhoudr security men to my house and my office more than once during the day and evening of Wednesday 25 April, and are located you Baza journalist colleague of the late Ahmed Mohamed Zine El Abidine.

About eight in the evening came to my house again and spoke with them over the phone my wife, told me that I am wanted by the security apparatus, and Altqona outside the house of mourning where I went with them to the security offices. Was questioned me about my comment Al-Jazeera on the letter of the President of the Republic in the city of White in the Bulletin of the sixth on the evening of Thursday 19 April. There was a lot of talk, where is said to have a video of the Bulletin, has been repeated to them what I said in that comment again.

Argument was based on several points: that such a comment is not said in the media, and that it is better for a lift to those responsible by other means, that I should be cautious when talking to foreign media and restricting some of the issues in the local media, and that some of the words used by non- decent. echoed all what needs to be reminded, and continued the investigation until the middle of the night, then asked me to come the morning of Thursday 26 April to continue the investigation, which they insist on calling "dialogue."

Reiterates the request of the audience on a daily basis until the day on Sunday the sixth of May, from morning until five at night where they are having me at the front desk without any question or inquiry, then asked me to come the next day. It seemed clear to me that the intention was humiliation on the one hand, and the disruption of work and other interests as a form of punishment is declared, and unjustified, or backed by any legal text.

At the end of the period of my detention on Tuesday evening the first of May, and demand my presence the next day I asked the security man to inform his superiors that I will not attend voluntarily, again, I would be committed to co-exist in the home and office if they wanted to talk to me or Ahoudara. Asked me to wait, and then returned the request to attend a written, for the first time, trying to convince me the need to attend and warning of the consequences of rejection. After long debate and agreed to attend on Wednesday, where I spent the duration of detention, then Adkhalona the officer, who discussed with me, then told me that I am required to attend ten days ends on Sunday, 05.06 and then I will not be required to attend.

After the end of the day Sunday, the tenth day of the call, I was surprised a man Security asked me to come on Monday, which means over the period that have been identified to me. I have decided, after consultation with some friends, go on Monday, 07.05 to security offices as a day of last resort, and non-compliance to request attendance on Tuesday, if my claim that, with my readiness to bear all the consequences. I have heard the message that was passed to me in the debate, that the failure to attend detention will mean directly, but will be done through the reasons or other reasons will be found or fictitious, but the main reason.

I will keep you on the details of what will happen

 Faisal Mohamed Saleh

In Sudan, journalist detained; newspapers confiscated

New York, May 8, 2012-The Sudanese security services must immediately release journalist Faisal Mohamed Saleh, who was arrested at his home today after facing two weeks of harassment, the Committee to Protect Journalists said today.

The National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) arrested Saleh, a columnist who contributes to several independent and opposition publications, from his home in Khartoum and took him to an unknown location, according to news reports and Faisal al-Baqri, the general coordinator of the group Journalists for Human Rights in Sudan, who spoke to CPJ. The NISS has not disclosed Saleh's health, condition, or whereabouts and has denied him access to his family or a lawyer, al-Baqri said.

Saleh has been a frequent critic of the government's human rights and press freedom record, according to news reports. On April 25, the NISS summoned Saleh for questioning after he made critical comments in an Al-Jazeera interview in regard to President Omar al-Bashir, according to a letter the journalist wrote that was published by the news website Sudanese Online on Monday. The NISS also warned Saleh to be cautious when speaking to the foreign media, the letter said.

"The Sudanese security forces appear to have targeted Faisal Mohamed Saleh because of his critical journalism," said Mohamed Abdel Dayem, CPJ's Middle East and North Africa program coordinator. "Authorities should release Saleh immediately and stop harassing him."

In his letter, Saleh also said that the NISS demanded he come into the office every day for interviews. He said he balked when some of the scheduled interrogations never took place. He was arrested today, news reports said.

In a separate development, the NISS confiscated the entire print run of the independent daily Al-Tayar yesterday, according to news reports. It is unclear why Al-Tayar's issues were confiscated, but the newspaper has been targeted in the past, according to CPJ research. In February, the NISS confiscated its entire print run and suspended the daily on charges of "jeopardizing national security."

On April 24, NISS agents confiscated the entire print run of the pro-opposition weekly Al-Midan,which has also been frequently targeted by the NISS, CPJ research shows.News accounts reported that the paper ran a cover picturing displaced people in Darfur, a subject that has been deemed taboo by the government, according to news reports.

In the past, authorities in Sudan have censored publications in advance by dispatching NISS agents to the newsrooms, but are now resorting to a new strategy in which they confiscate publications after they are printed, thus forcing newspapers to incur heavy financial losses, CPJ research shows.

  | Re: نذاء الى جميع الشرفاء بالمنبر, والى جمعيات حقوق الانسان ... (Re: Khalid Kodi) | | Freedom House Calls for Release of Sudanese Journalist

Freedom House calls for the immediate release of prominent Sudanese journalist and human rights activist, Faisal Mohamed Salih, who was arrested by the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) on Tuesday, May 8 outside his home in Khartoum. Mr. Salih was arrested after two weeks of daily harassment by security personnel since his appearance Al-Jazeera channel on April 19th, where he criticized the Sudanese government.

According to Mr. Faisal Elbagir of Journalists for Human Rights, Sudan, he is deeply concerned with Mr. Salih’s whereabouts which are unknown. His family has not been able to reach him or get any information about his situation. Mr. Salih was targeted by the Sudanese government throughout 2011 for his critical voice on human rights issues, especially the rape of youth activist, Safia Ishag, at the hands of security personnel.

Freedom House demands that the Sudanese authorities immediately charge or release Mr. Salih, and provide him access to legal assistance as well as access to his family. The Sudanese government must also release all political prisoners, cease its harassment of journalists and continuing confiscation of independent newspapers.

 About Sudan:

Sudan, ruled by a military-backed regime that brought President Omar al-Bashir to power in 1989, is considered by Freedom House to be one of the world's worst human rights abusers. According to the Freedom of the Press 2012 publication, Sudan is ranked 170 out of 197 countries assessed. President Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide for his involvement in the Darfur conflict. Since South Sudan achieved independence in July 2011, Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party has brutally cracked down on peaceful protests throughout the country and continued to fight rebels in Darfur, South Kordofan and the Blue Nile states in an effort to maintain its grip on power. The recent boarder conflict with South Sudan has intensified the government’s crackdown on opposition voices throughout the country.
