Quote: ASTORIA (WABC) -- A stray bullet hit the wife of a Sudan diplomat while walking with her young children near her Astoria, Queens, home. Mawahad Elbahi, 31, was struck between the shoulder and neck when shots were fired outside her 31st Drive home, near 21st Street, at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. She was listed in stable condition at Elmhurst Hospital. She is expected to make a full recovery. Elbahi was carrying her one year old baby in her arms and walking with her three year old when she was shot. Neither child was hit by the gunfire. Detectives believe the victim was caught in a dispute between groups of two young men. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said she"was clearly an innocent bystander. It had nothing to do with her& There are too many guns on the street, way too many guns out there. We've been saying that, the mayor has been saying that virtually every day. It appears to be two groups of young men who were in a dispute and they start shooting carelessly, randomly. And this woman is literally within an inch of her life. I thank god she's in stable condition. She's clearly a very lucky person. " The suspects, up to five men, fled the scene. No arrests have been made. The victim's husband, Mohamed Elbahi, is assigned to the Permanent Mission of the Republic of the Sudan to the United Nations. Kelly said he is Sudan's consul general.
