The Economy of Sudan
The New York Times in 2006 described the economy of Sudan as one of the fastest-growing in the world. This was brought about by the cessation of the 21-year civil war between the north and the south and the expansion of exports of the country’s crude oil. By 2005, oil production was placed at 401,000 barrels per day, and oil exports amounted US$1.9 billion accounting for 70% of the country’s total export earnings, even as oil production continued to increase to 466,000 barrels per day in 2007. In mid-2008, the country’s economy was considered booming because of continued increase in oil production and high oil prices in the world market, and a huge inflow of direct investment from other countries. Aside from crude oil, the country’s export products include cotton, gold, sorghum, peanuts, sesame seeds, gum Arabic, sugar, meat, hides and live animals.
Agriculture and livestock remain as an important sector of the economy. Agriculture employs 80% of the country’s workforce and contributes 39% of gross domestic product (GDP). Main agricultural exports consist of cotton and gum Arabic, while grain sorghum or dura, millet, wheat, sesame seeds, peanuts and sugar cane are produced largely for domestic consumption. For livestock, camels and sheep are exported to Saudi Arabia, Egypt and other Arab countries. Its other export markets include Japan, China, Indonesia, United Arab Emirates, South Korea and Malaysia.
With the 21-year civil war now resolved, the country has started to rebuild its infrastructure in order to attain its export and development potentials in the next years.
