The Regional Institute of Gender, Diversity, Peace and Rights (RIG/DPR) Short Profile
Who We Are
To achieve a broader perspective, Ahfad University for Women established a women's studies unit in 1986 and then promoted it in 1999 to become an Institute of Women, Gender and Development Studies (IWGDS). AUW promoted the current Institute of Women, Gender and Development Studies to a regional institute of excellence with a vision to promote not just gender equality but also peaceful coexistence, respect for differences, diversities and human rights. Hence, the Regional Institute of Gender, Diversity, Peace, and Rights (RIG/DPR) was established in 2010 and its region is North and West Africa, Nile basin and beyond.
The RIG/DPR is launched in partnership with the university of Adis Ababa in Ethiopia and Makrere in Uganda.
Links at local level:
We have contributed to the integration of women and gender issues in the curriculum of many universities such as the University of Gazira, Sudan University of Science and Technology, Ismail Al Azhari University and the University of El Mahdi.
The field attachment and dissertation being part of the MSc. and B.Sc degrees award requirement linked RIG/DPR with several schools at the University. As well the MsC linked us to several UN agencies, INGOs, NGOs as well as government bodies.
The Institute undertaken consultancies to some government bodies and NGOs and free consultation; dialogue and advocacy with several activities. The Institute contributed in the development of the quota in electoral law; engendering the constitution; changing the Sudanese women common agenda after the referendum, among others activities.
Regional and International Links:
RIG/DPR established links since it was a unit of women studies in 1987 with several universities and centres outside Sudan that led to curriculum development promotion, establishing our postgraduate programmes, joint research, joint publications, staff exchange, institutional strengthening and capacity building for young staff. These included at regional level universities in Uganda, Adis Ababa, Cairo, Tunisia; in Europe Holland, Germany, U.K., Norway, Spain; in America USA and Canada; East Asia and several UN agencies and bodies.
Current Activities:
The NORAD- funded project: The Regional Institute of Gender, Diversity, Peace and Rights (RIG/DPR) 2010 – 2014:
This five-year project (2010-2014), funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) is being implemented by a three-member partnership that includes the Ahfad University of Women (AUW), the Addis Ababa University (AAU) in Ethiopia and the Makerere University (MAK) in Uganda, with the collaboration for specific issues of Juba University (JU). One of its main objectives was to enable the upgrading of the old Gender Institute to become the new Regional Institute of Gender, Diversity, Peace and Rights (RIGDPR). For RIGDPR to achieve its goal, many activities are carried out (research, civic engagement …etc).
Signing the EMMIR agreement with Oldenburg University, February 2011 – 2014:
The project involves a joint master programme and staff exchange. The partner universities are: Universtiy of Stavanger (Norway); University of Oldenburg (Germany); University of South Bohemia (Zchek Republic); University of Nova Goriga (Slovenia); University of Ahfad for Women (Sudan); Universities of Makere and University of Mbarara (Uganda).
Furthermore, the institute has just recently in October, 2010 signed another joint Edu-link consortium program with these eight universities. This program will facilitate exchange of students between the partner universities to spend one semester in non EU country; encourage staff exchange for research and teaching between universities; and, enhance research to be undertaken by students and that will be supervised by joint supervisors from the partner universities.
United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA) supported Project implementation started since 2000 – to date:
The current programme is related only to gender mainstreaming (GM) and women empowerment and includes training programmes for capacity building.
The Impact of Quota System in Sudan on Enhancing Women´s Political Engagement in Party Politics.”:
The Regional Institute of Gender, Diversity, Peace and Rights (RIG/DPR) and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada have signed a 2 year research project. It includes 5 other regional universities.
The Diversity Research: part of NORAD funded project.
Base line survey on Gender Mainstreaming in political parties:
This is a small survey for the political parties. It is funded by the United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA).
Project of Gender Mainstreaming in Ministry of Health policies and programmes funded by WHO 2011-09-14
Workshop on Women & Constitution in Sudan.
RIG/ DPR organized on April 2nd a one day workshop “Pathways to the New Constitution”.
WHO Regional MENA Office:
Transforming Health Systems: Gender Rights in Reproductive Health: training courses for the MENA region 2005 – to date.
