Congressman Johnson Calls for UN Investigation of Alleged War Crimes Against Sudanese Nuba
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Hank Johnson, who represents Georgia’s Fourth Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, today delivered remarks on the House floor regarding allegations of war crimes committed by the Sudanese Armed Forces in Sudan’s South Kordofan state. Video of his speech is available in embeddable format via YouTube (LINK). The full text of his remarks are below
“Thank you, Mr. Speaker.
“Mr. Speaker, with a heavy heart I turn our attention to the plight of Sudan's Nuba people, who are fleeing their homes in the tens of thousands as the Sudanese Armed Forces conduct a brutal military assault on their homeland. There are widespread reports that Sudanese forces are bombing, shelling, and executing civilians in the oil-rich state of South Kordofan. The Sudanese government has barred non-governmental organizations and the press and is restricting the movement of UN personnel.
