Quote: Proclamation on Sudan Referendum Whereas, the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) of 2005 in Sudan has put an end to a civil war that is considered the longest military conflict in Africa, and that resulted in more than two million victims; and Whereas, the United States played a key role in bringing the disputed factions to agree and sign the CPA, which stated that on January 9, 2011 the people of Southern Sudan are to decide by Referendum on their own destiny: whether to be part of the current Sudan or to establish an independent country; and Whereas, the government of President Omer al-Bashir has continued to work against the principles of the CPA and was held responsible for violence in Southern and Western Sudan especially the Darfur region; and Whereas, the Human Rights Commission is responding to the appeal of the Amherst Darfur Coalition, a local Amherst grassroots organization, in calling for a national vigil on the eve of the Referendum to alert the world to the possible violence that may be expected to be instigated by the government of Khartoum to abort the Referendum; and Whereas, the Town Meeting Resolution on Darfur in 2005 made Amherst a leading community among the nation in protecting civilians in Sudan; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Select Board of the Town of Amherst , does hereby proclaim January 8, 2011 as Sudan Vigil Day in Amherst and the Select Board encourages all Amherst citizens to be mindful of the suffering of the people of Southern Sudan and urges that all municipal, state, federal, and international bodies send strong messages to the government of President al-Bashir stating that the people of the world will not allow any violence that aims to stop the rights of self-determination in Southern Sudan.
