TEDxKhartoum
Community Based work … Soul Based Passion
Earlier March 2011, Number of TEDxKhartoum organizers gathered in the training center of MTN Sudan for the TEDxShoutOut live webcast, almost 80% of the members attended at 6m, the ShoutOut was at 10 pm.
It was a long night , The Training Center was like a Beehive, everybody was working on something, the Technical Support Team preparing the IT, Audio and Visual Equipment for the live webcast show, The Finance Team was writing notes and talking to members of various teams asking them about their requirements to finish the setup of the final budget, the Speakers team were negotiating the final list of the speakers, the Marketing team was busy on setting up their plan, the art and design team members was moving like rockets.. fixing sign boards … holding Cameras and taking historical shots from here and there for people working, talking or even laughing, the Social Activities Team members were “Socializing!” with guests and organizers, part of the organizers was preparing the snacks, tea and drinks for the coffee break, It was really a “Do Something” day.
While I was in the conference room waiting to the live webcast to start my phone rang, I went out of the room to answer, It was call from my dad asking me to do some “Family Guy” tasks but I gently apologized, I even invited him to attend the shoutout but he couldn’t make it, and when I got back into the room, I saw Ms. Enas Satir form the Speakers team speaking to the audience, she finalized her talk at the moment I got back and when I was trying to sit back on my chair Dr. Anwar Dafallah our TEDxKhartoum Team leader asked me to step forward and speak to the audience about our Team and its tasks, the Tech Support Team, It was a surprise and I wasn’t preparing an organized speech for such moment, I stood in front of the people, and started directly to talk about our team, but Dr. Anwar asked my gently to firstly tell the people who am I before I get into details because some of them were new to the group, I mentioned some facts about my education and field of expertise, and when I finished the serious part the introduction I felt like I want to talk to the people from my heart… I said:
“I don’t like my field of study at the university, I worked in job that I don’t like, I attained my Master Degree in a field that I don’t like, now I would like to study in a field that I don’t like, I even want to do my PHD in the field that I dislike”….
I stood silently for a while, the audience were looking at me waiting for what am I going to say next… and finally my heart spoke instead of my tongue saying:
“but when it comes to TED, I am sure that am doing something I LIKE”
The crowd started strongly clapping, some of them were smiling and others looked so happy to hear what I said, I felt like I said what they want to say…
And I continued..
“my life is full of things that I dislike but I am so happy that now TEDxKhartoum exists in my life”
I believe this is what every single member of TEDxKhartoum feel about it, I met different types of extremely valuable personalities in TEDxKhartoum group ... from very different backgrounds and fields of interest, they all gathered under one umbrella … TED … with different objectives and thoughts ….. but they stood for ONE cause … ONE passion … ONE goal …. Ideas to Change.
