African union denies Sudan request to delay meeting Nov 29, 2010 9:25 PM | By Sapa-AFP The African Union turned down a Sudanese request to postpone a meeting of its Peace and Security Council due to take place on the sidelines of an Africa-EU summit in Libya. "The meeting will take place as scheduled" on Tuesday in Tripoli, the AU Peace and Security Commissioner Ramtane Lamanna told AFP. "The positions of the Sudanese parties are not on the agenda," he added. Earlier on Monday, Khartoum fomrally requested a postponement for an unspecified period of the Peace and Security Council meeting, Sudan's official SUNA news agency quoted foreign ministry spokesman Moawiya Osman Khaled as saying. Lamanna said former South African president Thabo Mbeki, who chairs an AU panel on Sudan, would present a report on the situation and that the meeting would also discuss events in the Ivory Coast and Guinea as well as other troublespots on the continent. Khartoum's request for a delay came a day after Sudan pulled out of the Africa-European Union summit which wraps up in Libya on Tuesday. Sudan is boycotting the summit in retaliation for the exclusion of President Omar al-Bashir, who faces an international arrest warrant which he blames on European governments. The International Criminal Court indicted Bashir in March 2009 on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity, and in July 2010 on charges of genocide, all linked to alleged atrocities in Darfur. Foreign Minister Ali Ahmad Karti said Bashir's no-show at the summit was "to avoid embarrassment to Libya" and that the decision was taken "under pressure from Europe."
