Blair urges tougher sanctions against Sudan over DarfurThursday 22 March 2007 14:19vote +50% Importance Ratingvote -British Prime Minister Tony Blair has urged tough new United Nations (UN) sanctions against Sudan's ruling elite in a bid to halt the killing in the Darfur region, his spokesman said in London Thursday.Blair made his call in a letter to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who holds the rotating European Union (EU) presidency.
He would discuss his proposals for travel restrictions and the possible freezing of assets at a summit in Berlin this weekend to mark the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome.
"The president of Sudan is clearly not complying with the agreement he reached earlier this year. Therefore, the prime minister believes it's time for a new tough UN resolution which would mean targeted sanctions aimed at the top 100 members of the Sudanese government and also those who are supporting them," the spokesman said.
"What he hopes is that the UN as a whole will support tougher action," added the spokesman, who said the letter would not be published. dpa at wjh
