PUBLICATIONS: • The Translator – A Novel (Polygon 1999, reprinted 2005) It was translated into German, Dutch, French, Spanish, Greek and Arabic. Available in Africa as part of the Heinemann African Writers Series. Will be published in the U.S. by Grove/Atlantic in Fall 2006. • Coloured Lights – A collection of short stories (Polygon 2001, 2005) Translated into French, German and Arabic. • Minaret – A Novel (Bloomsbury, London 2005 and Grove Atlantic, New York 2005) . To date Italian, Dutch , Turkish , Indonesian and French rights have been sold.
RADIO BROADCASTS: • The Sea Warrior: An original drama transmitted on BBC Radio 4 in May 2001 • The Translator: An adaptation of the novel as a five-part drama serial. Broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in February 2002. • The Museum: A drama adaptation of my award-winning story transmitted on BBC Radio 4 in October 2002. • The Mystic Life: A play transmitted on BBC Radio 4 in May 2003. • The Lion of Chechnya: Historical play about Imam Shamyl broadcast in July 2005 on BBC Radio 3. • Readings of my short stories – Coloured Lights, Visitors, Majed ,The Museum, Amulet and Feathers (specially commissioned) were broadcast on BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 4 and the BBC World Service.
AWARDS: • Winner of the Caine Prize for African Writing 2000 for my story The Museum included in the collection Coloured Lights. • Honorary Award from the Sudanese Cultural Club, Oman. • Minaret long-listed for the Orange Prize 2006. • The Translator was long-listed for the Orange Prize, the IMPAC Dublin Awards and short-listed for the Saltire Scottish First Book of the Year Award. • Coloured Lights was short-listed for the MacMillan Silver Pen Award, administered by PEN. • Radio adaptation of The Translator was short-listed for the Race in the Media Awards 2003.

WORK EXPERIENCE: • 1996 to 1997: Tutor of Creative Writing, Aberdeen Arts Centre. • 1995 to 1996 Part-time Research Assistant, Department of Land Economy, University of Aberdeen. • 1994 to 1995. Freelance Statistician. Analyzed the results of large-scale medical studies carried out by the Department of Gynaecology and the Department of General Practice, University of Aberdeen. • 1992 -1994. Lecturer in the subjects of Computing and Calculation and Analysis of Numerical Data, Aberdeen College Of Further Education. • 1991-1992. Research Analyst for a London-based educational trust. Responsible for the Trust's research projects; questionnaire design, data collection, analysis and report writing.
