Quote: KHARTOUM, May 20 (Reuters) - Sudan detained the leader of the opposition alliance on Thursday for three hours of questioning, in a continuing crackdown on dissent in Africa's largest country one month after elections. Farouk Abu Eissa's detention followed the arrest of opposition Islamist Hassan al-Turabi in a midnight raid on his house on Saturday, the seizure of assets of his Popular Congress Party paper and the arrest of four staff. Abu Eissa, 75, told Reuters security forces had asked him why the alliance was calling for Turabi's release and about the International Criminal Court, which issued an arrest warrant for President Omar Hassan al-Bashir last year for war crimes in Darfur. Bashir denies the charges. "They are worried," said Abu Eissa, adding that he had been well treated. "The world outside is all moving around the ICC and they want to end any escalation in Turabi's defence -- I said we will not stop." "It's a matter of principle because (his arrest) is against the constitution and the principles of human rights which the constitution is based on," he added. Turabi's party is a member of the opposition alliance. "The government is tightening its grip on security and this is the beginning," Abu Eissa said. "They want to send a signal so other people get scared (but) we are not scared -- we've been arrested many times." A security source declined to comment on the reason for Abu Eissa's detention. Turabi's family, who visited him in the Kober prison where he is being kept in solitary confinement, said he had not yet been questioned or charged. Bashir won the presidential election in April and his ruling National Congress Party won an overwhelming majority in parliament. Much of the opposition boycotted the polls, citing fraud. Opposition parties that did take part also alleged fraud after the big NCP win. Abu Eissa, a former foreign minister, was a member of the opposition caucus in parliament before the elections, which returned only a handful of opposition seats in north Sudan. Members of parliament enjoy immunity from prosecution under Sudanese law.
