Waving placards with the inscriptions like “Unite South and North Korea before calling for unity of Sudan”, the protestors, mostly the youth, denounced the UN chief’s comments which they termed ‘abusive to the South Sudanese who have long suffered”. Mr Ki-moon was quoted saying that: “They would work hard to avoid a possible secession of the South and that both the UN and AU had a big responsibility to maintain peace in Sudan and make unity attractive”. A protestor, Mabut Maler said: “It is misrule by the Khartoum government that forced us to think of separation so that our future should not be dictated upon us”. If Khartoum doesn’t change its system of governance, then all regions of Sudan including states have rights to form their own countries”. The protestors said in a statement that: “Ban Ki-Moon might have been influenced to make the utterances but we still call his pardon to repent and justify the facts that would suit the current situation we are in here in Sudan”. “Mr Ban Ki -Moon should be aware that Sudan had been in existence like other countries in the world that today enjoy an atmosphere of total peace. However, Sudan has never been at peace, not because the Sudanese communities are against peace but because the Arab-dominated government has been misruling the Sudanese despite their rich cultural diversities”, read part of the statement obtained by Gurtong. They said the UN boss had not examined the negative parts of the unity of the country simply because of the oil industry that lies in the South of the country, adding that the UN and other bodies watched while Sudan disintegrated. “Ki-Moon’s statements revealed to us that the UN at its capacity needs South Sudanese to be slaves, abductees, illiterates, victims of any circumstances and remain at war in their lifetimes in order for foreign countries to continue benefiting on Sudan’s oil. We want to prove him wrong that South Sudanese’s fate would never be determined by individuals’ interests rather by the citizens who have for years have bore the brunt of civil war”, read the statement. The United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) officials urged the angry protestors who had presented their grievances to the UN premises to calm down and assured them of their neutrality as they work hand in hand with the CPA partners in implementing the outstanding sections of the peace deal signed in 2005. “We understand your request, but we still urge you to remain peaceful as we shall try to maintain our neutrality and ensure your grievances are forwarded to our high offices”, said a UN official only identified as Malik. The angry protesters marched to the Jonglei SPLM secretariat, the Governors’ office, secondary schools, Dr John Garang Institute of Science and Technology and to the open market. The acting State Governor Mrs Rachael Nyadak Paul thanked the protesters for conducting themselves peacefully as they aired their grievances and assured them that the separation of South Sudan was inevitable. “The Referendum is ready and only awaits implementation come the Referendum in 2011. The separation of South Sudan is a right that has to be expressed by all of us. Let us remain calm and be focused on our vision”, she told the crowd outside her office.[/QUOTE ]
