By James Gatdet Dak December 10, 2009 (JUBA) – Southern Sudan’s ruling political party, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) has announced that it has begun the process of selecting its candidates for the upcoming 2010 general elections. Soldiers stand to attention behind a SPLM flag. This was announced on Thursday by the Speaker of the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly and SPLM Deputy Chairperson, James Wani Igga. Igga who also chairs the party’s Elections Strategy Committee told the press that the candidates selection criteria has been approved and that the applications will be submitted to respective electoral colleges in each state in the country. This is with effect from Thursday, 10th December and the dateline for submission of the applications is 31st December, 2009. Igga further explained that the positions open for interested aspirants in the party include the position of the President of the Republic of Sudan, President of the Government of Southern Sudan, state governor and member of parliament at the national, Southern Sudan and state levels. The electoral colleges will scrutinize the applications received from the aspirants for selection of the candidate. (ST)
