Course in Advanced Research Methodology
(Part 1: Qualitative Methods) The course aims to give an introduction into Qualitative Research Methods and the methodological foundations of qualitative research. Furthermore, it will cover the possibilities of mixing qualitative and quantitative re-searches. One focus will be on analyzing qualitative data and how to use computer programs to support the data analysis. The participants are asked to present their own research projects during the course and to use their own data (if available) in the data analyses exercises. Course aims and objectives: The course is intended to give an insight into qualitative re-search methods. Participants will gain practical experience in study design and the application of the major research methods. By the end of this course, participants should be able to •Appreciate the importance of qualitative research methods research; •Decide when a research topic requires qualitative research methods and selects the most appropriate qualitative format to address the research question; •Begin to develop skills required to conduct interviews, facilitate focus groups and undertake ethnographic research including observation; •Understand how to analyse qualitative data; and begin to understand how computer programs can be used to assist the data analysis in qualitative research.
Some of the topics to be addressed are: •Epistemological background of qualitative research •How to combine qualitative and quantitative methods theory, ethnography •Different traditions of inquiry (grounded theory, biographical studies, ethnography, case studies) •Getting started: sampling techniques, recruitment •Different methods of data collection (interviewing, focus groups, Participant observation: methods, tips, and ethics of observation. •Analysing data: coding, constant comparison, theorising, writing-up findings •Validity and Verification in Qualitative research
Who the course is intended for: This course is open to PhD Candidates and lecturers who teach in the field of qualitative research methods. Attendees do not need to have any previous experience or know-ledge of qualitative research methods, but should have experience of, or ideas about, a research project using these methods.
Tuition Fee SDG 250 Students will receive a CD for all the reading materials. Places are limited – deadline for receiving application is 26th August 2009
