13th International Day of Older Persons
Last Update: 30 September 2003
As Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations, calls for us all to make better use of older people’s skills in development, older people themselves are celebrating the 13th International Day of Older Persons around the world.
In Ghana, around 500 older people in and around Accra are taking part in a 5-kilometre “Hand in Hand with the Elderly” walk. The walk is one of a number of activities organised by HelpAge Ghana, which also include free eye screening and the provision of spectacles for those in need.
In Cambodia, the Ministry of Social Affairs and HelpAge International are organising a ceremony in the southern city of Takeo, addressed by the Minister for Social Affairs, His Excellency Ith Sam Heng, and HelpAge International’s country programme manager, Mr Dim Vy. Representatives of older people’s organisations will also take part.
In Colombia, a meeting of older people’s leaders is taking place in Bogotá from 1-3 October, organised by HelpAge International and Red Tiempos. 60 leaders of older people will join with representatives from international institutions to have their say on development issues and to monitor regional governments’ implementation of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing.
In Argentina, Fundación Campanas, is organising a four-day series of activities including talks, panels, discussions, fairs and exhibitions. Representatives of central and local governments will attend.
