Sudan's ruling party, opposition group to support Islamic law
KHARTOUM, July 13, 2003 (dpa) -- Sudan's ruling National Congress (NC) and the prominent opposition Umma party have agreed to support implementation of the Islamic (Sharia) law in the country, NC Secretary General Ibrahim Omer told journalists Sunday.
Speaking to the press at the NC headquarters, Omer stated that the two parties in addition have joined together to promote democracy, good governance, and the rule of law among other things.
The secretary general disclosed that a meeting had taken place between Sadiq El Mahdi, the leader of the Umma party, and Salah Abdalla, a senior NC member, in which outstanding issues between the two had been resolved.
El Mahdi in May signed in Cairo a memorandum of understanding on a secular Sudanese government with the leader of the rebel Sudan Peoples Liberation Army (SPLA) John Garang and the head of the prominent northern opposition group Democratic Unionist, Mohammed Osman El Mirghani.
The declaration angered Khartoum as well as other Islamic groups in Sudan, leading to the arrest of a prominent northern dissident and human rights activist, Ghazi Suleiman as well as the targeting of other opposition figures by radical Islamist groups.
Omer said an agreement will be signed soon between Umma and the National Congress, but declined to state when and where.
Sharia law is a major obstacle in the Sudan peace talks between the government and SPLA, who have been fighting since 1983. ===
