Al Ayam Paper, Khartoum: Consultations on the three areas come to a close
The IGAD-sponsored talks between the government and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) over the regions of Abyei, Nuba Mountains and Southern Blue Nile province, ended yesterday in Machakos, Kenya. The mediators posed questions to the two Sudanese parties over perceived differences concerning the three contested areas, their geographical boundaries and the interim period.

Meanwhile, the Presidential Peace Advisor, Dr. Ghazi Salah El Din in a press statement in Khartoum, said that the government’s approach towards the contested areas is rational and logical take full into account the geo-political and historical realities of the areas.

A source close to the talks in Machakos told the paper that the negotiations were conducted through indirect consultations, facilitated by the mediators to attempt to define the positions of the two parties and were not direct negotiations.

Al Anba Paper, Khartoum: Government welcomes the opposition’s ‘Cairo Declaration’ supporting the IGAD peace process
The Presidential Political Advisor, Dr. Qutbi Mahdi has welcomed the “Cairo Declaration” issued by the opposition’s tripartite meeting on Sunday reinforcing the peace process in Machakos.

Commenting on the outcome of the meeting held between the SPLM/A leader John Garang, Umma Party leader, Sadiq Al Mahadi and the leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), Mohamed Osman Al Mirghani, Dr. Qutbi said that if the meeting maintained this approach that supports national unity and our efforts with the SPLM/A towards peace, then this would definitely pave the way for a comprehensive national consensus and an agreement on the resolutions result from the peace negotiations in Machakos.

But he added that if it proved to be an axis to oppose the government or aiming at creating obstacles instead of an accord then it would have a negative impact.

However, the Secretary General of the ruling National Congress, Ibrahim Ahmed Omer, expressed a cautious welcome to the Declaration, saying there is nothing new in the Declaration and the reference made in the Declaration to the obsolete Asmara Resolution 1995 has no real significance.

Commenting on the reference made in the Declaration to the status of the national capital, Omer stated that the status of the capital as dealt with in the Machakos negotiations considered the capital as part of the northern Sudan where the Sharia law shall be observed.

He called upon the SPLM/A not to respond to any pressures from the Umma and the DUP in this regard.

Al Hayat Paper, Khartoum: Land cruiser vehicles and Al Thuraya cell phones banned in Northern Darfur
While the ruling National Congress party launched its popular initiative for solving the problems in Darfur through dialogue with all factions, the governor of Northern Darfur State, Mohamed Yusef Keer has confirmed the commitment of his government to the decision of the President of the Republic to suspend dialogue with the “outlaws’.

Keer, in a press statement yesterday said “we will not negotiate with those people unless we receive approval from the Federal government”.

Keer issued a decision banning the use of Land cruiser 4-wheel drive vehicles outside the capital El Fashir or selling their spare parts without the permission from the authorities.

The decision also banned the sale of large quantities of petroleum products and medical drugs as well as the banning of use of Althuraya mobile phones, without permit from security authorities, the only exceptions to this being officials holding constitutional posts.

Dpa, Addis Ababa: Ethiopia begins imports under zero tariff accord with Sudan
An Ethiopian business is to begin producing aluminium structures for construction and other purposes shortly, importing aluminium metal from Sudan for the first time under the zero tariff agreement signed a year ago, it was announced Saturday.

The two firms involved, B&C Aluminium Plc of Addis Ababa and GIAD Aluminium Plc. Of al-Gezira, near Khartoum concluded the deal on May 15, Biruk Haile, Managing Director of B&C Aluminium Co. said in Ethiopia on Saturday.

The Preferential Trade Agreement, which the Ethiopian parliament endorsed in February, abolished customs duty tariffs on all products and commodities that were traded between Ethiopia and Sudan.

"The shipment of the first 30 tons of aluminium metal frameworks purchased last week is also expected within a few weeks at our plant in Addis Ababa through Djibouti," Biruk stated.

He declined to disclose, however, the value of the first aluminium metal frameworks shipment from Sudan and the amount his company saved from customs duties from the deal under 'zero tariff' arrangement.

AFP, Khartoum: Sudan awards contract for second mobile network
A group of Sudanese and Arab companies has been awarded the contract for the country's second mobile telephone network, officials announced Saturday.

The unamed group bid 113 million euros (about 130 million dollars) for the contract, the director of the National Telecommunications Corporation, Al-Tayeb Mustafa, told a press conference.

Firms in the group include Yemeni Sabaa Phone, Sabaa Islamic Bank, the Sudanese National Fund for Pensions and the National Fund for Social Securities.

The group was selected from a field of 29 Sudanese and international companies to compete with the country's sole mobile network, Mobitel.

The government is to sign a final agreement with the group on June 1. The new network is expected to be up and running within nine months.
