    preview

“… “The Lost Boys” is the near-mythical name for thousands of young men from Sudan, who fled civil war and ethnic repression by traveling, on foot, through southern Sudan to Ethiopia. After an almost three-year journey across deserts and war-torn lands, where hundreds died from exhaustion, exposure, or bullets, they arrived in Ethiopia, only to be expelled and forced again to walk to refugee camps in Kenya. Benjamin and His Brother follows two brothers, “Lost Boys” from the camps who now prepare them to be resettled in the United States, in search of the “Gold” that America promises. While one remains in the camp, the younger brother relocates to Texas, and discovers an entirely new set of problems and challenges. An intimate fascinating look at immigrant life, and at the dilemmas facing young men who dream of American education, but are instead greeted with minimum-wage American jobs, Benjamin and His Brother also helps personalize one of recent times’ most infamous examples of forced exile. - Jason Sanders - (Pacific Film Archive).”

Benjamin & His Brother was made by Arthur Howes, an experienced British film director, a fellow in several universities world-wide, and a senior university lecturer in film making studies in the UK. He is a very good friend of the marginalised people of Sudan (i.e. the Nuba mountains and South Sudan), who already made two brilliant films about the Nuba in Sudan, namely: the Nuba Conversations, and Kafi (story) come Home. The film about the Lost Boys is a wonderful story about two brothers, Benjamin and His Brother (William). It is a moving story by all accounts, told in motion as a factual documentary, narrating a sensitive story from Kakuma to USA. It is a must view for all those who are interested to get a glimpse into the world of dreams, aspirations and hopes of young South Sudanese, who were forced by circumstances beyond their control, to be resettled in far away lands from home. The film shows in a modest way, how the real life is, in the so called "land of dreams", where the promised Gold failed to materialize. Baak Wol - UK.

"... In 1987 over 20,000 Southern Sudanese boys known as 'The Lost Boys' walked from Sudan to Ethiopia, and to Kenya with promises of an education away from the chaos and war in Southern Sudan. Now, fifteen years later, they are being resettled in the USA." - Arthur Howes.

"... I am called Benjamin, I was eight years old when I left my mother and my father and my lovely country Sudan. There I joined the multitude of children walking to Ethiopia, and eventually we are here now in Kakuma, which is in Kenya, and I am on the way now going to America with seven thousand of us. Where will you be taken to in America? I don't know? What will America be like? I don't know" - Benjamin.

"... Traditionally they think that when you get to the modern world, you become addicted to the modern ways, but America is not going to change me completely, from William to someone called America. There is a Gold in America, and this Gold is called Education - They told me to go and dig this gold and bring it back to them." - William.
