Darfur - Lives are hanging in the balance From: George Rupp, IRC ([email protected]) Sent: Thu 3/12/09 3:23 PM
Dear Friend of the IRC,
Last week Sudan's government forced the closure of the International Rescue Committee's aid programs in Darfur and North and East Sudan, putting in jeopardy the lives of 1.75 million men, women, and children who depend on the IRC for water, health care, and education.
Supplies are dwindling rapidly. There is enough medicine to last only a month, while fuel to run water pumps is already running out. We fear that the crisis will force a mass movement of refugees into neighboring Chad and surrounding countries.
Help ensure that the IRC is fully prepared with essential medicines, clean water, blankets, food, and shelter for those who are forced to flee once again.
Your urgent donation will assist Darfur's vulnerable refugees as well as support our emergency response efforts in the Congo, Zimbabwe, Gaza, and other crisis zones around the world.
The gravity of the situation in Sudan cannot be overstated. The Sudanese people continue to endure a terrible humanitarian crisis, and the sudden impact of our expulsion by Sudan's government has been enormous:
Until now, the IRC has provided medical care, water, sanitation, and education for 650,000 people in Darfur and another 1.1 million people in North and East Sudan.
We have been ordered to close our healthcare program in South Darfur's Kalma Camp, leaving 91,000 people without essential medical services.
In Kass, also in South Darfur, our forced departure will deprive 100,000 people of clean drinking water.
Without the immunization programs and health care services the IRC and other aid organizations provide, there is a heightened potential for mass outbreaks of meningitis and other rapidly spreading diseases.
Lives are hanging in the balance.
Your emergency gift will help victims of the Darfur crisis who are taking refuge in Chad and surrounding countries and will ensure that the IRC is on the ground to serve other refugees and displaced people elsewhere around the world.
Time is of the essence: please make an emergency gift today.
Thank you.
