All Solidarity with honest journalists
Step up the struggle against laws restricting basic freedoms
Statement from UDLP
We have been closely following the continued violations against press freedom and the pursuit of honest journalists for no crime but their vigilance exposing the failure of the regime to tackle corruption and corrupted, and their struggle for the benefits of citizenship under the Constitution which guarantees them the right to express .
We have been also following the developed events which calumniated into the arrest of a group of journalists in the city of Omdurman. We consider this as an expression of flagrant lack of respect for the Constitution and clearly beyond the most elementary human rights. We condemn all kinds of oversight and arbitrary control of the press and pursuiting of honest journalists by the security services, which work to justify the regime's policies in the suppression of basic freedoms.
We are fully aware that the regime has adopted a mechanism for the suppression of the media on systematic manner, through a process of misleading information to the public. In this process articles are subject before publication to the review and revision of security agents, and only articles consistent and in conformity with the policies of National Congress Party are allowed. Both in independent newspapers and opposition newspapers are forced to reverse a false reality, inconsistent with present realities.
Here, as we can understand the insistence of the National Congress Party in consolidating the status quo to serve its social, material and moral interests, it is difficult for us to understand the position of the SPLM towards these practices.
The liquidation of the tools of repression inherited from the pre-Nivasha period will not be done only by morally condemning or monitoring the violations of human rights, but it requires hard work and arduous struggle of the masses of our people and political and social forces, against all laws restricting the basic freedoms, and as a necessary step in the way of democratization.
