LONDON (AFP) – The former president of Botswana Festus Mogae was named Monday the recipient of the 2008 Mo Ibrahim prize for good governance in London.
Mogae becomes the second-ever winner of the award, which gives its recipient five million dollars (3.7 million euros) over 10 years and 200,000 dollars annually for life thereafter, as well as 200,000 dollars a year for 10 years towards the winner's public interest activities and good causes.
The 69-year-old was commended by the chair of the judges, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, for building stability and prosperity in the diamond-rich country and for diversifying its economy, to reduce its dependence on the gems.
First elected president in 1998, Mogae stepped down earlier this year and was succeeded by Ian Khama.
The foundation behind the prize was created in 2006 by Mo Ibrahim, a wealthy Sudanese businessman and the founder of the Celtel |
