    Individual’s gender identity is one of the principle elements that not only contributes to shaping personal subjectivity, but also considers as the central element of the core existence of individual’s physical being. Therefore, it is of crucial significance, while criticising gender-biased social views and practices, to sensitively differentiate between the biological dimension and the socially-constructed dimension of gender identity.

    So let us firstly identify what we mean by each of these two terms “sex” and “gender”.

    Sex is a term that normally used to classify the kind of human being according to their biological differences. And upon this initial classification, which is usually verified by official documents such as birth certificate, individual’s physical identity gets socially identified. The term “gender”, on the other hand, describes the social significance given to these differences; or it is the socially structured, and culturally assigned, roles and practices that associated with being a women or a man.

    One of the distinctive aspects of gender identity is that, unlike the other identity components, it has biologically-embodied components. Therefore, it is always problematic to separate the natural facet of gender identity from that of social facet. Built upon such natural differences, social conception of gender identity is strongly influenced by stereotypical feminine and masculine characteristics and traits which automatically applied – in many societies – to differentiate between gender categories. These differentiation methods are usually expressed through stereotypical language signs and words which are associated with either being a woman or a man.

    Nevertheless, the sensitivity of this differentiation emerges when it results in certain social and economic consequences. That is to say, social differentiation between women and men acquire particular significance when one gender category get economically and socially advantaged more than the other; and of course there is a difference between the natural observable physical difference on the one hand and the social significance given to this difference on the other. In this concern, arguments about what is “natural” have been used in many societies both to justify women’s exclusion from particular activities, usually the more valued paid work, and at the same time, to assign them with certain “appropriate” roles, usually the unpaid domestic duties and caring work.

    This social classification of gender-appropriate roles has resulted in entrenched identity conceptions of the male as a breadwinner and the female as a wife and a mother, which is often regarded as a secondary role and an extension to that of the man. Through this categorisation, gender significance has then fairly transcended its limited role in shaping individual’s sense of self, to be one of the essential factors that directly interfere to determine the social organisation patterns.

    Another point is that, in the contemporary industrial societies, women’s physical being is subjected to social discipline powers which operate to maintain the status quo by prescribing to women the appropriate rules and conditions that they should follow. These discipline powers are ubiquitous ones; that is, they are everywhere and at the same time they are nowhere, and any woman who decides to ignore such disciplines will be considered as being unnatural, and “will not escape public sanction”.

    Nevertheless, the positive side of this discipline processes is that it has been internalised and accepted by the majority of women in these societies as a “natural” thing, which is not completely negative. To be feminine, according to one consideration, is a sign of mastery and is rewarded both in the public and private sphere. To resist feminisation is a sign of being “unnatural” and is punished by exclusion from the principal centres of power … Furthermore, to be feminine may be the most crucial element in women’s sense of existing not only as an individual, but also as a sexual individual. To dismantle femininity as a burden placed on women, therefore, paradoxically may threaten many women with the loss of any identity at all.

    A relevant point is that, it is true that gender identities are not fixed, and there are different conceptions of gender roles across time and between cultures. And even within the same culture, individual’s conception of gender categories varies from a fixed, stereotypical depiction in early childhood, to a more sophisticated and flexible response with the grown experience of that individual. Nevertheless, the freedom of one’s choosing a preferred gender identity is mainly determined by many sophisticated factors. That is, in addition to biological constraints and cultural and legal views, the social attitude and tolerance towards such an issue also greatly influence gender rearrangement freedom.
