Many usually look forward to a Sunday afternoon for mainly one reason; to put up their feet and relax.
This appeared to be the approach of Mamelodi Sundowns players yesterday when they hosted Al Hilal in their second leg of the Caf Champions League.
They may have won through a solitary goal by Surprise Moriri, but the Brazilians looked far too relaxed – as though they had no aspirations of making it through to the group stages of Africa’s biggest club competition.
It’s no surprise that the side from Tshwane were knocked out at this stage of the tournament. In fact, one would say it has become a norm for the side to disappoint the fans in this tournament.
Sundowns were last season booted out of the tournament by African giants Al-Ahly and this time they were given the same treatment by Hilal, losing 4-3 on aggregate to the side from Sudan.
Hilal were happy to sit back and absorb the pressure from the home side, but Trott Moloto’s troops failed to take the initiative to bury the visitors.
They created opportunities, but failed dismally to convert them.
The only time they took control was when they grabbed the lead early in the second half, courtesy of crowd favourite Moriri.
The Bafana Bafana midfielder, who has an uncanny knack of scoring spectacular goals, unleashed a fierce shot that gave Hilal goalkeeper Elmuz Mahgoub Abdalla no chance.
Early this season, Sundowns president Patrice Motsepe said he wants his side to conquer Africa.
Now he will have to wait a while longer following his team’s lacklustre display yesterday.
They are currently fourth on the Absa Premiership table and do not look like a side that will be competing in this tournament next season.
The few Hilal supporters in attendance yesterday were delighted with the result and the players responded as they go on to the next stage of the competition.
